The invasion was quickly stopped. American forces were forced to withdraw. By August 16, 1812 General Hull surrendered in Detroit.

The war was declared as a result of long dispute with Great Britian. The central dispute surrounded the impressment of American soldiers by the British. The British had previously attacked the USS Chesapeake and almost caused a war two years earlier.

Answer: "We have met the enemy and they are ours".

On September 10, 1813, Commodore Perry defeated the British fleet at the Battle of Lake Erie. That day Lake Erie became an American lake.

Answer: August 19, 1812

HMS Guerriere suffered 21 dead and 57 wounded. The Constitution suffered 9 dead and 13 wounded.
