Answer: It was a crime to hide from the SS

In countries under Nazi rule it was a crime to hide from the SS. In the camp they were sent to afterwards the punishment for hiding from the Nazis continued. They were sent to the punishment block, where they had to do hard labor.

Answer: Westerbork

The Franks, the Van Pels and Mr. Pfeffer were among the last Jews to be deported from Amsterdam before the city fell to the Allies. Westerbork was a transit camp in the north-east of the Netherlands, where Jews and also some Roma and members of the Dutch resistance were held before being sent to concentration camps and extermination camps.
3. Which of the following was NOT sent to Bergen-Belsen?

Answer: Edith Frank

Witnesses have stated that when Margot, Anne and Auguste were to be deported to Bergen-Belsen, Edith Frank was physically weak and was left behind in Auschwitz.

As the Soviet Army advanced into Poland the SS sent many inmates from Auschwitz to camps further west, in particular Bergen-Belsen and Buchenwald.

According to witnesses, Edith saved her food for her daughters as she was getting psychotic after Margot and Anne were deported to Bergen-Belsen. By saving all her food for her daughters, Edith died of starvation in Auschwitz. Hermann was gassed. Amazingly, all eight members of the "Secret Annex" survived the selection when arriving at Auschwitz.

Early in 1945 both she and Margot became ill from typhus Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Anne was sure that her parents had died back in Auschwitz and a couple of days after Margot had died, Anne also died of the disease.

Otto Frank was the only survivor of the eight people that had hidden in the "Secret Annex". He died of lung cancer in 1980, 91 years old.

Peter Van Pels had been working alongside Otto Frank in Auschwitz and Otto Frank looked after him as a father. When the SS started getting the prisoners out of Auschwitz on death marches, Peter hoped this would result in his survival. Even though Otto tried talking Peter into staying at Auschwitz, Peter went on a death march toward Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria.

Answer: Neuengamme

After being imprisoned in Amsterdam for three days, Pfeffer and the others from the "Secret Annex" were sent to Westerbork and on to Auschwitz. In Auschwitz, Pfeffer was separated from the rest. He then went with other medics to Sachsenhausen and on to Neuengamme (near Hamburg) where he died from enterocolitis.

The exact dates of the deaths of Auguste and Peter Van Pels are unknown but according to Red Cross, Peter died on May 2 1945. Documents that were found, after the war showed that Auguste was alive on April 11 1945 in Theresienstadt ghetto. When the camp was liberated however in early May 1945, she was dead. Therefore she could have died either before or after her son.

Answer: Hermann Van Pels

Hermann Van Pels was gassed, towards the end of September, 1944, about three weeks after arriving at Auschwitz. Fritz Pfeffer died of enterocolitis on December 20, 1944 in Neuengamme. Edith Frank died of starvation on January 6, 1945 in Auschwitz. Margot Frank died of typhus in early March, 1945. Anne Frank died of typhus in the early March, only a couple of days after her sister, both in Bergen-Belsen. Auguste Van Pels died at the end of April or early May, 1945 in the Theresienstadt ghetto. Peter Van Pels died on May 2, 1945 in Mauthausen. Otto Frank survived the Holocaust and died of lung cancer in 1980.
