Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Along with the United Kingdom, the United States, and the Soviet Union, this nation was considered one of "The Four Policemen".

Answer: China

The UK, US, and Soviet Union were considered "The Big Three", but China was also a key founder member of the United Nations. President Roosevelt coined the term "Four Policemen" to refer to these four allies.
2. What nation came under direct attack in World War II from a foreign nation for the first time in its history?

Answer: Australia

Australia was attacked by Japan during the war. They also made up most of the Allied strength in the Southwest Pacific.
3. On May 10, 1940 (the same day that the invasion of the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France began), Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Whom did he replace?

Answer: Neville Chamberlain

Chamberlain had tried to maintain a policy of appeasement to keep the peace with Hitler. However, he was unable to avoid conflict when Germany invaded Poland. In May 1940 he resigned from his position in response to devastating criticism of his handling of the Norwegian campaign.
4. At the Munich Conference in 1938, a region of this nation was given to Adolf Hitler by the British and French.

Answer: Czechoslovakia

Hitler demanded to "free the oppressed Germans" of the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia. At the Munich Conference, Britain and France decided to give Hitler what he asked for, in order to avoid war. Soon after the Munich Pact was signed, he looked to take the rest of Czechoslovakia as well.
5. What Allied nation was invaded by Germany to start World War II in Europe?

Answer: Poland

This one is very obvious. Poland was invaded on September 1, 1939. Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later.
6. What nation built the Maginot Line after World War I, hoping that it would keep Germany out?

Answer: France

The Maginot Line was a line of advanced protections from enemies along the border with Germany and Italy. Germany was able to get around the line by invading France from Belgium.
7. Which Allied army fought its way to Berlin and reached the city first?

Answer: Soviet

The Red Army attacked Berlin in April 1945 and, in less than a month, they took it. This marked the Allied victory in Europe. Hitler and some of his followers killed themselves while in the city, afraid of what the Soviet Union would do with them.
8. This nation signed the Non-Aggression Pact with Germany in 1939.

Answer: Soviet Union

The two dictators signed the pact in order to conquer more land in Eastern Europe. However, Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941 against the pact. Hitler thought the Soviet Union would collapse, but as a result of the Battle of Moscow (October 1941-January 1942) Germany found itself fighting a war of attrition - something it had not prepared for and was not well placed to conduct.

With the help of American supplies, the Soviet forces were gradually able to regain the initiative and ultimately fight their way to Berlin. Meanwhile, other Allied powers opened up fronts in North Africa and, eventually, Western Europe to take some pressure off of Russia.
9. On to the Pacific: The Americans won this stunning and decisive battle just six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Answer: Battle of Midway

The Battle of Midway shocked Japan, which had hoped to take the US out of the war with a victory. The Americans were greatly assisted by code-breaking which gave them warning of the Japanese attacks.
10. Who was the commanding general of the Allied forces, who planned and executed the Invasion of Normandy?

Answer: Dwight D. Eisenhower

Eisenhower was the overall commander of the invasion. Montgomery commanded the Allied Ground Forces during the battle. Montgomery chose Dempsey to command the British 2nd army in the Invasion. Bradley was given command of the 1st US army during the invasion.
