Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Heydrich's full name?

Answer: Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich

Reinhard's first name came from an act in one of his father's operas, the appropriately named, "Reinhard's Crime."
2. When was Reinhard Heydrich born?

Answer: March 7th 1904

Heydrich was a Pisces, along with Josef Mengele (born Mar 16), Adolf Eichmann, and Albert Speer. (Both the latter were born on March 19th!) ... I have no idea what that says about the sign Pisces!
3. Where was Heydrich born?

Answer: Halle an der Saale

Halle an der Saale was in Prussian Saxony at the time (now Sachsen-Anhalt). It is about 30 miles north west of Leipzig.
4. Which branch of the German military was Heydrich originally interested in as a career?

Answer: Kriegsmarine (Navy)

Heydrich made it to Oberleutnant (First Lieutenant). At the time when Heydrich joined the Kriegsmarine (1922) the SS didn't exist and, in any case, didn't become part of the armed forces till the late 1930s.
5. Why was Heydrich discharged from his military position in 1931?

Answer: For conduct unbecoming of an officer

It is unclear what actually happened. It was alleged that he had an affair with the daughter of an officer of the naval dockyards and than refused to honor a marriage proposal. Heydrich was a notorious womanizer, so it's certainly possible!
6. What was the highest position in the SS that Heydrich attained?

Answer: Obergruppenführer

It was the highest rank one could attain in the SS at the time, second only to the Reichsführer SS, a personal rank reserved for Himmler. The rank of Oberstgruppenführer rank was not introduced till 1942.
7. What was the name of the operation to assasinate Heydrich?

Answer: Anthropoid

Operation Gaff was the attempt to kill Erwin Rommel, Operation Reinhard was the first stage of the Final Solution, and Operation Burza was a series of local uprisings by the Polish Home Army. The assassination was carried out by members of the Free Czechoslovak Army; they were flown from Britain to Bohemia by the RAF.
8. The assasination attempt did not kill Heydrich immediately. He clung to life for days afterwards. What was the actual cause of Heydrich's death?

Answer: Septicemia

Heydrich was only 38 years old. His autopsy simply stated that he died as a result of his wounds becoming septic from the pieces of shrapnel that had been lodged into him by the bomb. An interesting sidenote, Heydrich was supposed to have gotten his car fitted with metal sheets for his protection but he just never got around to having it done.

Heydrich was wounded on 27 May 1942 and died on 4 June 1942. The Nazis exacted a terrible revenge.
9. After Heydrich's death, Himmler hesitated before finally appointing this man as Heydrich's successor, a trained lawyer (and alcoholic!) from Austria. Who was this man?

Answer: Ernst Kaltenbrunner

Obergruppenführer Kaltenbrunner possessed almost none of Heydrich's talents of intrigue. After the war, he was a defendant in the main war criminals trial at Nuremberg, the sole representative of the SS. He became known as "the man with no name" because of the number of times he denied his signature. Through most of the trial, he whined and feigned illness.

He was found guilty, hanged, and his remains cremated in the ovens of Dachau in 1946.
10. Who gave the eulogy at Heydrich's funeral?

Answer: Kurt Daluege

Which is an amusing sidenote since Heydrich and Daluege absolutely despised one another, Heydrich referred to Daluege as "the idiot." Daluege replaced Heydrich as Reichsprotektor of Bohemia and Moravia. After the war, he was sent back to Czechslovakia and hanged for war crimes in 1946.

I hope this has proved interesting, thank you for taking my quiz!
