In 1860, in reaction to the election of Lincoln, South Carolina voted to secede from the union.
2. This battle was the first MAJOR land battle of the American Civil War. It was fought some 25 miles southwest of Washington DC along a now infamous creek.

Answer: Battle of Bull Run or First Manassas

In July, 1861, many northern on-lookers came to picnic and watch the ensuing battle. Much to their surprise, the Confederates drove not only the Union troops, but all of the on-lookers fleeing for their lives. The Union retreat went all the way to the city gates of Washington DC.
3. What was the capital of the Confederacy for most of the war?

Answer: Richmond, VA

While not the first capital of the Confederacy, it was the most used one. It fell in spring of 1865.
