Johnston was upset from the very beginning that he did not get to keep his place in the seniority line of generals. And this hurt his relationship with Davis. It is thought to be one of the reasons Davis replaced him later at Atlanta, with Hood. Moreover, Johnston was giving up much territory.

One of the people that survived the sinking was Commander Raphael Semmes, of which the commander of the Kearsarge thought it to be most unfortunate that Semmes should escape. Semmes later became a general in the Confederate Army.

Everett was much admired by Lincoln for his skills as an orator. Lincoln said that he never had received an opinion that he prized more. Everett had spoken for about two hours on that November 19th 1863, Lincoln a little more than two minutes.
