Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Photography was introduced to the masses during the American Civil War. Many photographers made their names familiar during this war. Who took the first photograph from a balloon?

Answer: Professor T.S.C. Lowe

While Matthew Brady is the most famous of the Civil War photographers, he often employed others to actually take the pictures. Professor Lowe was a balloonist who introduced the craft as an observation vehicle.
2. General Winfield Scott, hero of the Mexican War, was named to head the Union armies at the start of the war. What state was he originally from?

Answer: Virginia

While many officers left the union army at the start of the war to join their native states in secession, Winfield Scott, a native Virginian, did not.
3. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson earned his nickname at the first major battle of the war. Who was it that gave Jackson his name?

Answer: Bernard Bee

While the whole story is controversial, General Bernard Bee is generally accepted to have told his men to rally around Jackson's troops, who were standing like a stone wall.
4. Who assumed command of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's troops after he was wounded?

Answer: Jeb Stuart

Though famous as a cavalry officer, Stuart assumed command after Jackson's fall.
5. When the Union army attacked at Fredericksburg, what river did they cross?

Answer: Rappahannock

The Union army actually arrived at Fredericksburg ahead of Lee's army, but was forced to wait while bridge-building materials were brought in, as there was no crossing for the large army. While Burnside waited, Lee arrived and prepared. The result was a disaster for the Union troops.
6. What Union general was "corked in a bottle" by General P.T.G. Beauregard?

Answer: Benjamin Butler

While Grant began his drive towards Richmond, Butler was to move up the peninsula and catch Lee in a vise. But Butler moved slowly, and Beauregard, with relatively few troops, kept Butler bottled up in the Bermuda Hundred area of Virginia.
7. Who replaced Confederate General Johnston as commander of the Army of Tennessee against Sherman in 1864?

Answer: General John Bell Hood

Johnston was one of the more experienced and respected generals at the beginning of the war, but actually held field command for only a short period.
8. Who wrote the song "Dixie"?

Answer: Dan Emmett

"Dixie" is known as the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy.
9. The Union army besieged Petersburg during 1864. A siege was a mixture of boredom, routine and sporadic action. During this siege, how many black soldiers earned the Congressional Medal of Honor?

Answer: 23

The Medal of Honor was created March 3, 1863 by Act of Congress.
10. Lew Wallace was a general officer in the Union army. What other accomplishment is he known for?
