Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Colonel William F. Cody founded the city of Cody, Wyoming during what years?

Answer: 1895-1896

Wyoming had only been a state since 1890 and Cody wasn't on it's way until 1895. Prior to its establishment it was inhabited by some ranchers and before that it was the home of the Crow Indian Tribes. Col. Cody was already in his 50's when he began the settling of the Cody, Wyoming area.
2. Colonel Cody had many professions during his life, however he is most known throughout the world for his _____.

Answer: buffalo hunting which provided meat for the railroad workers

Around the world Colonel Cody was more like "infamous" in his time. He also toured with his Wild West Show and performed for dignitaries and general audiences in many different countries. Colonel Cody was also a Pony Express rider and scout in his younger years then after settling down in Cody, WY he focused on becoming a business man and growing the infant town of Cody.

However, his nickname comes from his hunting bison in order to supply railroad workers with meat.
3. In November of 1902 Cody, WY had the largest of these west of the Mississippi River ...

Answer: Hotel

On November 18, 1902 the town of Cody which only had a population of 200 at the time had a turn out of over 500 people to come for the opening of "The Irma Hotel," biggest hotel west of the Mississippi River - also called "Buffalo Bill's Hotel in the Rockies."
4. "The Irma Hotel" in Cody, Wyoming was named after one of Buffalo Bill's relatives. Which?

Answer: Daughter

"Irma" was the daughter of Colonel Cody. The hotel still stands today and is still one of the destinations of Cody, WY. Rooms are available and the restaurant is one of the best in Wyoming. There is also a live gunfighter show and shops.
5. In 1902, how much did it cost to stay one night at the Irma Hotel in Cody, Wyoming?

Answer: $4.00

At $4.00 you were paying quite a substantial price to stay at this "Hotel in the Rockies." Buffalo Bill had every intention of drawing in many of the wealthy and adventurous to the area and fully expected them to stay at his beautiful hotel.
6. What group was contacted by Colonel Cody and asked to send a group of its church members to the Cody/Big Horn Basin area to build irrigation canals because they had extensive experience with them?

Answer: The Latter Day Saints (Mormons)

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ("Mormons") were contacted by Colonel Cody because of their extensive knowledge in the building of irrigation canals throughout the Salt Lake Valley and several other communities in Utah and Idaho. They loaded up their families and tools and headed to the Big Horn Basin.

These canals are still in place today as is the "Sidon" canal in the Big Horn Basin which took the saints more than four years to build. Most did not build homes until the canal was finished and many of their posterity are still living in Cody and its nearby communities today.
7. The "Walls Building" in Cody, WY was the home of the First National Bank. Cody, WY's first bank robbery occurred there in 1904. The bank was robbed by which outlaw(s)?

Answer: The "Hole-in-the-Wall" Gang

The cashier was shot and the robbers got away on horseback. They were never convicted. There has only been one other bank robbery in WY since then (no casualties and the robber was caught). I suppose that's because Wyomingites take their right to bear arms very seriously.
8. The "Stinky Waters" of the Shoshone River which flow through Cody were once bottled and sold for medicinal purposes?

Answer: True

One example is an old building located in Cody that was built as a bottling company at 912 12th Street where you can still see the doorway outline (although bricked in now) where the horse and buggy would back up to load to transport the bottled water. Today, you can bathe in similar waters in Thermopolis, WY that some still claim have "healing" powers.
9. Colonel Cody loved the land around Cody, WY because they had such ample wildlife and great hunting grounds. He had a hunting lodge located next to which famous place?

Answer: Yellowstone National Park

This lodge was the third of three hotels (Irma, Wapiti) established for the tourists to stay at on their way to visit Yellowstone National Park. Pahaska Teepee which was also home to Colonel Cody's hunting lodge was only acutally visited by him about six times because of his failing health. One of these visits included one Prince Alfred of Monaco. You can still travel North from the Yellowstone Highway and see the tree which they carved in to remember Prince Albert's visit.
10. Buffalo Bill Cody is burried in Cody, WY's "Old Trail Town."

Answer: False

Colonel Cody died in Denver, CO at his sister's house on January 10, 1917. Although his will states that he is to be buried on Cedar Mountain overlooking the "City that he loved" his wife (not so loving) buried him on "Lookout Mountain" in Denver, Co.

His body currently lies under a slab of concrete as there were rumours that the people of Cody were going to try and take his body back to Cedar Mountain. Although Colonel Cody died in January, he wasn't buried until June because the ground was so frozen.
