General Buford had two brigades and held the rebels off until the 1st corps arrived, commanded by Gen. Reynolds. He would die of pneumonia a few months later.
2. This Union Corps commander was killed in McPherson's woods and was replaced by Gen. Abner Doubleday.

Answer: General John Reynolds

Gen. Reynolds was killed leading the famed "Iron Brigade" in the fight on McPherson's ridge.
