Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo (1815) on this date by the Duke of Wellington.
The 'Finest Hour' speech was delivered by Winston Churchill to the House of Commons on 18 June 1940, just as news was coming in of the collapse of France.

On this date in 1919, hundreds of Indians assembled at Jalian Walla Bagh, a park in Amritsar. They were to protest peacefully against the Engiish for arresting Dr.Satyapal and Dr. Saifudin Kitchlew (renowned local nationalists).
The park had a well in the centre and only one entrance. When in an unexpected move, British General Reginald Dyer ordered the troops to open fire, people rushed to the gates and many jumped into the well. It is one of the most remembered tragedies in India.
Guy Fawkes was born on 13 April 1570. He was one of the conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. He was caught, tortured, confessed and convicted. As an act of mercy, James I (the main intended victim of the plot) ordered the Guy Fawkes should simply be hanged and spared the more gruesome aspects of a traitor's execution.

The attack on the Pearl Harbor in Hawaii by Japan led the US to declare war the very next day, and on December 11 Germany declared war on the US. World War II became truly global.

Magna Carta (The Great Charter) was sealed by King John on this date in 1215.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela is a South African leader who spent 27 years in prison for opposing apartheid, the cruel policy by which the races were separated and whites were given power over blacks in South Africa. When he was released from prison, Mandela became the first President of a black-majority-ruled South Africa in which apartheid was officially ended.

A symbol of hope for many, Mandela was also given the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for Peace jointly with F.W. de Klerk.

Stanley went to the "Dark Continent" in search of Dr David Livingstone and when he found him, he allegedly said, "Dr Livingstone, I presume". The exact date is uncertain but this is the widely accepted date.

At an Ibero-American summit in Santiago, Chile, the Spanish King Juan Carlos I insulted the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who continually interrupted (even after his mike was switched off!) after all!) the Spanish Prime Minister. King Carlos said, "¿Por qué no te callas?" or" Why don't you just shut up?". These words became an overnight sensation.
