Answer: 1545-1563

Started under Pope Paul III, this was a reaction to the Reformation. It took place in Trento (Adige, Italy) (1545-1547), Bologna (1574), and Trent again (1559-1563). Pope Pius IV presided over the last sessions between 1559-1563, after Paul III's death.
2. Which rather controversial Pope split the "New World" between the Portuguese and Spanish in 1494?

Answer: Alexander VI

Alexander VI was also known as Rodrigo Borgia. He was the illegitimate father of one of the most infamous women of the Renaissance, Lucrezia Borgia (b. 1480), who was said to often poison drinks. He was also known for his many mistresses and his scandalous sex life.
3. What is the name of the treaty that split South America in half?

Answer: Tordesillas

The Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) was meant to split the "New World" evenly between the Spanish and the Portuguese. It was not at all even, just take a look at a map, all the Portuguese got was Brazil, the Spanish got everything else. The Zaragoza antimeridian was added in 1529 after the explorations of Magellan to show where the Tordesillas area ended.
4. What is the name for the not-so-politically correct term from Spanish and Portuguese colonial times in Latin America that referred to people of mixed European and Amerindian ancestry?

Answer: Mestizo

This term was created originally for this population, but has spread throughout the world and acquired a range of meanings.

Bloody Mary (1516-1558) is to believed to have died from cancer, based on the accounts of her close attendants.

This university still exists in Salerno, located near Naples. It is the capital of the province by the same name. Approximately 40,000 students attend the university.

"Quadrivium" is Latin and translates as "four ways/roads" in English. It was preceded by studying the "Trivium" or "three ways/roads".

Answer: Peter Abelard

Peter Abelard (1079-1142) was far too early in history to have been part of the Renaissance, which did not start till 200 years after his death. He taught theology at the Cathedral School of Notre Dame. He was most famous for having an affair with a woman named Heloise. For this, he was castrated.
9. What Renaissance banker lent 500,000 Florentine Florins to Charles V for a less than noble cause?

Answer: Jakob Fugger

Jakob Fugger (1459-1525) was a German banker in Augsburg who founded the Fugger Company. He lent this large sum of money to help bribe the electors for Charles V.
10. Which English philosopher wrote the political work, "Leviathan" in 1651?

Answer: Thomas Hobbes

Hobbes (1588-1679) wrote about the natural rights of humans. It helped establish the Western political theory.
