Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country did the Industrial Revolution originate in?

Answer: Britain

The reason that the Industrial Revolution originated in Britain was that it had a large market for its goods, was willing to adopt new agricultural methods, had a well-developed banking/credit market, and had a large population. It also had extensive trade.
2. Approximately how many miles was Athens from the city of Marathon in ancient Greece?

Answer: 26

The actual distance was about 25.5 miles. Also, after the chosen runner ran the distance he yelled 'Nike' (meaning victory in Greek), collapsed, and died from exhaustion.
3. Who was known as the "Sun King"?

Answer: Louis XIV of France

Louis XIV became king when he was a child and eventually became one of France's greatest kings, best known for his palace of Versailles.
4. Who were the French Huguenots?

Answer: Protestants

More specifically, they were Calvinists, who would fight for their rights in France and in 1598 received the right to practice in specific areas of France under the Edict of Nantes (which was revoked by Louis XIV in 1685).
5. What were the two main social classes in ancient Rome?

Answer: Plebeians and Patricians

These two social classes often fought with each other, but the Plebeians reached the height of their power when they were allowed to run for public office (a privilege previously denied to them) and even had their group of people to fight for their rights.
6. Who was the first European monarch to be executed by an elected legislature (i.e. Parliament, Congress, National Assembly, General Assembly, etc.)?

Answer: Charles I of England

Charles I of England often circumvented the Parliament for projects that he needed money for in ways that many believed were violations of the law, but the courts were always on his side (because he appointed the judges). Parliament was supposed to approve royal budgets. Finally, Parliament got fed up with his attempts to circumvention its power and some of its members decided to raise an army to remove him from power. Eventually, the Parliament was able to defeat Charles I's royalist forces, but he refused to bow to their pressures (because he believed in the idea of Divine Right, which stated that he made decisions by God's grace), so he was executed in 1649, only to be replaced by another absolute ruler named Oliver Cromwell in 1653, who established a Puritan dictatorship, until his death in 1658.
7. Which "barbarian" group sacked the city of Rome in 410 C.E.?

Answer: Visigoths

Although the Western Roman Empire had been in decline for at least two centuries before this event, this is often seen as a key event in the collapse of the Western Roman Empire.
8. Which of the following statements about the Italian Renaissance is NOT true?

Answer: Everyone was directly affected by it

The reason that this statement is not true is that only the higher levels of society were affected by it, the lower groups (such as the peasants) were not affected by it at all. Additionally, the other statements are clearly aspects of the Italian Renaissance and therefore incorrect answers.
9. How did Martin Luther believe one earned eternal salvation?

Answer: Through faith alone

The Catholic Church had often held that Tradition, scriptures, and good works were all the key to eternal salvation, while Luther held that only your faith in Jesus could get you to Heaven. This idea, among others will become one of the central concepts of Lutheranism and Protestantism.
10. What was the "Aristotelian" view of the universe?

Answer: Belief that the Earth was the center of the universe

This belief was proposed by the Greek philosopher Aristotle in ancient Greece. Many of his ideas were accepted as fact prior to the Scientific Revolution, but then were subsequently disproved during that period.
