Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Between 1764 and 1775, the people in the American Colonies had to deal with different acts made by the British. These included the Sugar Act, Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts. What was the intent of these three acts?

Answer: To create taxes on certain items

Taxes were put on items because Britain needed money to repay debts incurred while fighting the French and Indian War about ten years earlier. The Sugar Act taxed sugar, the Stamp Act taxed many types of paper, and the Townshend Acts taxed a variety of items.

While acts passed between 1764 and 1770 were mostly tax-related, acts passed between 1770 and 1775 sometimes had other effects. One example of an act not involving tax was the closing of Boston's harbor in 1774 as a punishment for the Boston Tea Party in late 1773.
2. In the early 19th century, the United States tried to trade, primarily with two countries, one of which was Britain. However, from 1803 to 1809, the other country attacked United States ships trading with Britain. Also, attempting to trade with this other country then prompted attacks by Britain. This meant that it was difficult for the United States to trade. What was this other country?

Answer: France

The United States was supposed to be neutral, and favoring one country over another would be seen as not being neutral. In addition to attacking trade ships, Britain was forcing people from the United States to join the Royal Navy. In response to these problems, the United States passed the Embargo Act in 1807, making all exports illegal.

However, this did not work, because exports were a major part of the economy.
3. In the 1800s, people in the United States decided that they wanted to have Texas. However, they had to take the land from Mexico. After the land was taken from Mexico, but before it became part of the United States, it was called the Republic of Texas. What years did the Republic of Texas exist?

Answer: 1836-1846

The border of the Republic of Texas was disputed while the Republic of Texas existed. The area between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River was claimed by both the Republic of Texas and Mexico, and then by both the United States and Mexico for two more years after the United States gained Texas. Between 1845 and 1846, the Republic of Texas still existed, but the United States treated it as if it was part of the United States.
4. In the United States, the 1850s had problems between slave states and free states. The Compromise of 1850 tried to prevent issues, but issues still occurred. The Fugitive Slave Act was enforced more strictly than it had been before. However, it also allowed a specific area to become a free state, creating political unbalance. These two events combined caused issues in the 1850s, and it eventually led to South Carolina seceding in 1860. Which important free state was added?

Answer: California

The Fugitive Slave Act required people to report escaped slaves and return them to their owners. This caused many "false positives" with free African-Americans being "returned". California became a state in 1850 because the population suddenly increased in 1848 and 1849 with the discovery of gold. It became a free state, with no slave state to balance it.

Another event in the 1850s that caused problems was the repeal of the Missouri Compromise (the Missouri Compromise was made in 1820 and repealed in 1854), which caused people to literally fight over whether Kansas would become a free or slave state. (It would have been free if the Missouri Compromise had not been repealed).
5. Between 1865 and 1877, there were problems with the southern United States, which had just lost the Civil War. People called "carpetbaggers" moved from the North to the South to make profit. Railroads in the South had to be rebuilt. What was this time called?

Answer: Reconstruction

This time was called Reconstruction because many people were reconstructing the economy of the South, which had many problems at the time. Unlike Reconstruction, which was an era, Manifest Destiny, Progressivism, and Imperialism were beliefs. Manifest Destiny was at its strongest around 1840, Imperialism around 1900, and Progressivism around 1910.
6. Between 1890 and 1910 (approximately - no exact start or end date), big corporations (and their owners) owned most of the wealth of the country. They became rich by creating monopolies. However, other people were not making enough money, and working conditions were bad, especially in the mills. Which of these people was NOT one of the richest people during this time?

Answer: William McKinley

Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and Henry Ford were all the richest person in the United States at one time (not all at the same time, obviously). Andrew Carnegie created U.S. Steel, John D. Rockefeller created Standard Oil, and Henry Ford created Ford Motor Company.

William McKinley was President from 1897 to 1901. Even though he was a politician, he was not one of the richest people.
7. The Great Depression started in 1929 and lasted several years. In response, Franklin D. Roosevelt helped fix problems by introducing programs that changed how banking worked (one being the FDIC, which still exists today) and putting people to work (including building roads). In which year did Roosevelt first become President and create the first of these changes?

Answer: 1933

Roosevelt became President in 1933. The FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation), created in 1933, made sure that if a bank closed, people would get up to $2,500 back from the government. The amount has increased several times over the years, including an increase from $100,000 to $250,000 in 2008.

Other acts and programs created in 1933 include the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Emergency Banking Bill, the National Industrial Recovery Act, the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, and many more.

Some of these continued to exist long after the Great Depression ended.
8. The United States fought in World War II between 1941 and 1945. Which of these was NOT true about the United States during those years of World War II?

Answer: The Soviet Union was an enemy of the United States

The Soviet Union was allied with the United States during World War II because both the United States and the Soviet Union were enemies with Germany. The United States and the Soviet Union would become enemies in later years. While the United States joined World War II in 1941, most countries that were involved started fighting in 1939. They included Canada.
9. In the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, people in the United States were afraid of Communism. However, the biggest problem was in the 1950s. There was a blacklist of people who were considered to be Communists in the early 1950s. Which of these people was associated with the anti-Communist movement during the 1950s?

Answer: Joseph McCarthy

Joseph McCarthy was a Senator for Wisconsin. His beliefs influenced many people, causing a term to be named after him: McCarthyism. McCarthyism was most prominent in the early 1950s, which was shortly after the start of the Cold War. Many United States politicians who were active in the 1950s were against Communism (including Richard Nixon), but Joseph McCarthy was one of the most well-known.

Frances Perkins, Woodrow Wilson, and Henry Clay all died before 1950, so they could not have had an impact on this problem. Frances Perkins was in Franklin D. Roosevelt's cabinet, Woodrow Wilson was President during World War I, and Henry Clay proposed the Missouri Compromise (1820) and the Compromise of 1850.
10. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the United States was involved in the Vietnam War. Most casualties in the United States occurred between 1965 and 1972, but the war began gradually several years earlier and faded out a few years later. Which part of Vietnam was the United States allied with?

Answer: South Vietnam

North Vietnam was Communist, so the United States was against North Vietnam. North Vietnam was with support from other Communist countries, like the Soviet Union. The United States was allied with South Vietnam, which was trying to avoid Communism. There was no such thing as East Vietnam or West Vietnam.
