Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What year was the Sino-French treaty that led to official French control of Annam (modern day Vietnam), which had become a French protectorate in 1883?

Answer: 1885

After the Sino-French war of 1884-1885, the Chinese were forced to withdraw their remaining forces from Annam.
2. What river did UN forces approach in 1950, causing China to attack and drive them south?

Answer: Yalu

China entered the Korean War by 'crossing the Yalu.' In August of 1950, the North Koreans were forced above the 38th parallel, and UN forces followed. On October 25 some units reached the Yalu, which separated China from Korea. As they'd warned, the Chinese attacked in massive numbers, and UN troops retreated far south of Seoul.
3. Who proclaimed himself Heavenly King and originated the devastating Taiping Rebellion (1850-64) that wracked China?

Answer: Hong Xiuquan

Hong Xiuquan, son of a poor merchant, interpreted the teachings of Christian missionaries in his own way, deciding he, along with Jesus, was also God's Son. He led a vast army and captured Nanjing. His rebellion was eventually destroyed, however, by his own gradual mental dissolution, imperialist forces (of whom Zeng Guofan was a general) and Western mercenaries.
4. A bit tougher... The treaty of 821 between China and Tibet was given what allegorical name?

Answer: Uncle and nephew treaty

Despite this name, it is accepted by many scholars that at this point in time, China and Tibet regarded each other as political equals.
5. Let's get obscure! What was the name of the seventh century Syrian who was the first Nestorian missionary to China?

Answer: Alopen

Very little is known about Alopen, of course, but he is believed to have entered China in 635. A stone monument was discovered in 1625 that described the state of Nestorianism in China in the ninth century. (Incidentally, the other answers are also Nestorian missionaries to other countries, and they predate Alopen by hundreds of years.)
6. Also known as Aman, this late second-century politician, warrior and poet is most famous for his conquests of the Three Kingdoms period. He was Prime Minister to a late Eastern Han emperor and first king of the Wei dynasty. Who?

Answer: Cao Cao

Cao Cao (155 - 220) used military genius and political strategems, such as assimilating the Yellow Turbans he had defeated into his own army, to conquer and unify north China during the Three Kindgoms period. He was defeated by his enemies, Sun Quan and Liu Bei, when they banded together against him. Cao Pi, his son, took his throne after his death and named the dynasty Wei. Cao Cao wrote several books on strategy as well as poetry.
7. What Chinese Communist Party leader and educator founded (when still a student) the magazine 'New Youth,' which stressed modernization and eschewing of Confucianism, in 1915?

Answer: Chen Duxiu

Chen Duxiu also founded two Marxist groups (which eventually merged to become the CCP) and participated in student revolutions. However, in 1927, he was expelled from the CCP over opposition on matters of policy.
8. What eighth-century Chinese poet, according to legend, drowned while drunkenly leaning out from his boat in order to embrace the moon's reflection in the water?

Answer: Li Po

Also Romanized Li Bo, Li Tai, Li Pai, etc. Li Po's (700?-762) serene Taoist outlook is evident in his beautiful poems, which also embrace the joys of drinking very heavily... so maybe the story is true!
9. In what city was the Communist Party of China founded?

Answer: Shanghai

On July 1, 1921, the CCP was founded in a building within the old French concession.
10. Here's an obscurity that's not strictly Chinese history, to throw off you dedicated Sinophiles. In the novel 'Tribulations Of a Chinese Gentleman', a young upper-class Chinese man arranges for his friend Wang, an ex-Taiping, to kill him when he believes he has lost his fortune. What French author wrote this amusing fiction?

Answer: Jules Verne

The original title is 'Les Tribulations d'un Chinois en Chine', first published in 1879. It's a funny novel with interesting characters, and Verne clearly did his homework on Chinese life, though he'd never been to China.
