1. What was the name of the first rifle Canadians used overseas in World War I?

Answer: Ross Rifle

The Ross rifle was useless as if would jam in the middle of a battle. It dated back to the Boer War but the Canadians wanted to use a Canadian gun. The Lee Enfield Rifle was the one used by most of the British at the time.
2. Why did the Portuguese government move to Brazil in 1808?

Answer: Napoleonic invasion of Portugal

The answer was the Napoleonic Invasion of Portugal. In 1820, the King of Portugal Dom João returned to Portugal while his son, Dom Pedro refused to return. In 1822 he proclaimed Brazil independent of Portugal and also made himself Emperor of Brazil.
3. Which Canadian Prime Minister established the Unemployment Relief Act during the Great Depression?

Answer: Richard Bedford Bennett

Unfortuately, the Unemployment Relief Act did little to help. Only a small portion was used for direct relief. Relief was about $2.50 each week and for ethnic minority groups, such as the Chinese, relief was even lower!
4. When the Ursulines came to Canada in 1689, what was their purpose?

Answer: to instruct aboriginal and French girls in the Catholic faith

Their leader was Marie de l'Incarnation of Tours, France. While she was extremely pious she was also able to find patrons for her convent, find provisions for this convent, learn many aboriginal languages, as well as write dictionaries for these languages, all while living through often tough colonial life.
5. What is a quilombo?

Answer: a settlement of Brazilian slaves who escaped from their owners

One quilombo, Palmares, lasted for 100 years, even though it was under siege by colonists. Unlike in the United States, it was much easier for escaped slaves to band together and form their own settlements. There was a much larger amount of slaves in Brazil than in the United States but they had much harsher treatment and they had a higher mortality rate in Brazil.
6. Who was the President of Mexico when the Constitution of 1917 became valid?

Answer: Venustiano Carranza

The constitution of 1917, the 4th for Mexico, was based on the ideas of the Flores Magón brothers who had earlier started the Partido Liberal de México. The constitution secured rights for workers, including women and children. Although on paper this constitution looked very beneficial for the people of Mexico, Carranza did very little to enforce it.

This constitution is still in effect.
7. What freed the slaves in the U.S.?

Answer: 13th Amendment

Contrary to popular belief, it was the 13th amendment that the freed the slaves, not the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation was a political maneurver as it only "freed" slaves in the states opposing the Union.
8. What treaty divided up South America between Spain and Portugal?

Answer: Treaty of Tordesillas

The Treaty of Tordesillas was signed in 1494, having been negotiated under the auspices of the Pope. All of the other answers were made up.
9. What does the Dust Bowl refer to?

Answer: drought stricken land in the U.S. in the 1930s

Many Americans from Oklahoma ("Okies") and other surrounding areas flocked from the drought ridden Dust Bowl to California in search of jobs.
10. What Mexican state was Emiliano Zapata from?

Answer: Morelos

Emiliano Zapata, a famous Mexican revolutionary, was from Morelos. He was a general of the Liberating Army of the south whose goal was to depose the dictator, Porfirio Díaz. He was famous for his Plan de Ayala, which denounced the rule of Francisco I. Madero, the sucessor of Díaz. Pancho Villa, another famous revolutionary from the Mexican Revolution, was from Chihuahua.
