Samarkand - a key point along the Silk Road; Damascus - capital of the Omayyad Caliphate; Cairo - capital of the Fatimid Caliphate; Mecca - the spiritual center of the Muslim World; Cordoba - the most powerful Muslim 'bastion' in Europe.
