Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1893, which European country acquired Laos as a protectorate?

Answer: France

The original French interest in Laos was the Mekong River's connection to China. The French believed that they could form a trade route up the Mekong, but they eventually found that the series of rapids along the great river made this impossible.
2. Which of these did not characterize colonial rule in Laos?

Answer: Massive building of infrastructure

The French, believing Laos to essentially be a backwater, only useful as a buffer zone between Vietnam and Thailand, tended to neglect Laos. Vietnamese were educated and employed as administrators in the region, and a great many came to settle in Laos.

The Lao people were not given the same educational opportunities as the Vietnamese, and infrastructure in the country was also ignored. The one growth area in the Lao economy was in the opium trade, despite French attempts in curtailing such activities.
3. Two of the great rebellions against colonial rule came via the leadership of two Lao heroes. One of the these freedom fighters was Ong Keo, was killed in 1910 while negotiating at Champassak. Who was the other, killed in 1936?

Answer: Ong Kommandam

4. World War II brought an interlude from colonial rule. Under the tutelage of the Japanese, which Lao King declared independence for the Lao state on April 8, 1945?

Answer: Sisavang Vong

This independence would not go unchallenged for long, as the French returned following World War II to reclaim their suzerainty over Laos.
5. Which Lao leader (and member of the royal family) first made contact with Ho Chi Minh and the Vietnamese communists, thus launching Laos on the road to communism?

Answer: Souphanouvong

Ho Chi Minh, who presided over the newly formed Vietnamese Republic, promised all assistance possible. Soldiers and weapons were immediately provided and would be provided throughout the struggle for Lao independence from France.
6. The USA recognized Laos as an independent state in 1950.

Answer: True

The USA officially recognized an independent Laos, much to French consternation, in 1950. The U.S. policy towards Laos began to change, however, when it was detected that communist influence was growing within the incipient Lao free regime.
7. In August of 1949 the Progressive People's Organization (PPO) was founded. This organization, developed for the purpose of ridding Laos forever of colonial influence, eventually turned toward communism as its official ideology and took what name?

Answer: Pathet Lao

8. The first Royal Lao Government (RLG) was formed in 1951 under Souvanna Phouma. Despite attempts to bring the PPO into a coalition with the RLG, Laos remained a battle stricken and war torn country. Civil war ensued between the forces of the RLG and the communists for the next two decades. The United States came in on the side of the RLG as the Vietnam conflict began to spill into Laos. In the late 1960s, in order to secure the strategically important 'Plain of Jars' in eastern Laos, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) began recruiting people of which ethnic group to fight against both the Vietnamese and Lao communists?

Answer: Hmong

The Hmong proved to be effective fighters, but like the United States, they were not able to overcome the fierce and relentless fighting of the communist freedom fighters. The result for the Hmong was that, following the war, they became a people with no land. Thousands and thousands of Hmong were re-situated in the United States, where a rather large Hmong community exists to this day.
9. On August 23 1975 the establishment of the new, socialist Lao state was announced at the capital of Vieng Chan (Vientiane). The communist party, by this time, had been renamed using what acronmym?

Answer: LPRP

The LPRP, or Lao People's Revolutionary Party, sprung out of the former Pathet Lao. They ruled with an iron fist, sending thousands of people to re-education camps and overturning the monarchy and the former Royal Lao Army.
10. By the early 1990s, after a decade and a half of strict socialist rule, Kaison Phomivan was elected president and began to push for the reform of the Lao government and economy. As a gesture to the Thai government in 1994, it was agreed that the first bridge would be built spanning the Mekong river from Laos to Thailand. What was this bridge called?

Answer: Friendship Bridge

This new assertion of friendship has had both positive and negative results. While Laos has been 'opened up' to the outside world economically, a new level of Thai economic domination has began to surface, very much a concern to the Laotian people. Laos has spent much of its history either being politically dominated or under the direct control of other powers, so these fears are by no means unfounded.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Laos.
