The Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huang is most remembered for his terracotta soldiers that are on display in Xi'an. His tomb and the terracotta army were constructed soon after he became emperor. He was also obsessed with immortality believing that there was an elixir of life that would let him live forever.

He was often swindled by people who claimed to have the elixir, as he would not resist the opportunity.

The "Ninety-Five Theses" was written by Martin Luther as a criticism of the Catholic Church, particularly against the selling of indulgences. The selling of indulgences was a practice used by the Catholic Church where people could purchase a papal pardon for sins without needing penance. Luther nailing the "Ninety-Five Theses" to the door of the All Saint's Church helped start the Protestant Reformation.

However, there is no actual proof that he physically nailed the work to the door.

Ferdinand Magellan attempted to become the first person to circumnavigate the globe, a journey he began on September 20, 1519. Although he was Portuguese, he made this voyage at the request of King Charles I of Spain. His first stop along the way after leaving Sanlucar de Barrameda, Spain.

He first stopped in the Canary Islands on the way to Cape Verde. Despite being sometimes credited as the person to circumnavigate the earth, Magellan was killed in the Philippines during the Battle of Mactan.

However, his expedition was completed by other crew members.

During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the English Navy, led by Sir Francis Drake and Lord Howard of Effingham, defeated the Spanish Armada. The Spanish had hoped to attack England so Roman Catholicism would return to the English throne and because Spain hoped to get England to stop meddling in the Spanish Netherlands.

The Spanish Armada suffered losses during the Battle of Gravelines and even heavier when it got caught in a storms off the coasts of Scotland and Ireland.

Toussaint l'Ouverture was the leader of the Haitian Revolution who led numerous slave revolts beginning in 1791 and fought for independence against the French. At the time, Haiti was called Saint Domingue. Although L'Ouverture was a strong leader, he was forced from Saint Domingue and died in France before Haiti achieved independence in 1804.

He was called the "Black Napoleon" or "Napoléon Noir" for his efforts.

David Livingstone was a British explorer in Africa who became lost for six years. Henry Morton Stanley was sent to find him, which he did in Ujiji, Tanzania where he supposedly greeted him with "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Livingstone allegedly replied "Yes. I feel thankful that I am here to welcome you." There is no certainty that these lines were actually uttered as neither man's journals have these words in them for November 10, 1871 entries.

Kate Sheppard was the leading suffragette in the fight for voting rights of New Zealand's women. Sheppard was a supporter of the temperance movement and male supports of that movement quickly advocated for women's voting rights. In 1893, New Zealand became the first nation to enfranchise women countrywide.

Interestingly, after women had been granted voting rights, both political parties in New Zealand tried to claim credit for it.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie was the spark that ignited World War I. On the day they arrived in Sarajevo, they were nearly killed by a grenade that missed them and hit the vehicle behind them. Soon afterward, Gavrilo Princip of the Black Hand, a group who wished to free Yugoslavs from Austrian control, shot and killed both the Archduke and his wife. Princip was part of a group of conspirators but the others all chickened out and reneged.

On the day she was assassinated, she Indira Gandhi was supposed to be interviewed by Peter Ustinov as part of a documentary. She was shot over thirty times by her bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. She was shot at about 9:30 in the morning but was declared dead several hours later. Because he bodyguards were Sikh, thousands of Sikhs were beaten or killed nationwide in retaliation. Ironically, on the day before her death she delivered a speech that contained the line "I am alive today, I may not be there tomorrow."
