Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was unusual about 1,200 of Adolf Hitler's soldiers?

Answer: They were of Jewish (or partly Jewish) origin

According to Bryan M. Rigg the origin of more than 1,200 of Hitler's soldiers was part Jewish, including two field marshals and fifteen generals (two full generals, eight lieutenant-generals, five major-generals) between them commanding up to 100,000 troops. See also:

2. After World War I, Hitler's older half-sister, Angela Raubal, lived in Vienna and was the manager of what?

Answer: Mensa Academica Judaica

Angela was the only member of his family with whom he kept in touch as he climbed in power politics. He stayed at her house and fell passionately in love with her daughter, Geli, who later committed suicide. By the time this happened (in 1931) he was sufficiently influential to prevent an inquest into the death: the hearing might have revealed scandalous details about his private life, to say the least.
3. After being killed at the Battle of Trafalgar, what did Horatio Nelson's crew do with his body?

Answer: Put it in a barrel of brandy

They put it in brandy to preserve it, so it wouldn't decay on the journey back to England. It is said that as soon as they arrived in port, they removed the corpse and drank the brandy to celebrate its return to England.
4. In ancient Greece burnt shells of snails and oysters, dried animal parts, and incense were the ingredients of what?

Answer: Tooth paste

The ancient Romans used pretty much the same recipes but often had specialist slaves whose only function was to clean their masters' teeth.
5. What did the USA's (2nd) President John Adams, (3rd) President Thomas Jefferson and (5th) President James Monroe have in common?

Answer: All died on 4th of July

Three of the first five US presidents died on July 4th. In 1826 Adams and Jefferson were dying as 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence (written by Jefferson) neared. On 4 July Adams' last words were "Thomas Jefferson survives". But Jefferson had died a few hours earlier. Five years later Monroe died on 4 July 1831.
6. Which of these was NOT a King of England?

Answer: Egbald the Incontinent

Edmund the Magnificent (940-946) and Aethelred the Unready (978-1016) were from the House of Wessex. ("Unready" in this context means "unadvised, without advice"). Svein Forkbeard ruled in 1014 and was first of four Danish kings who ruled until the House of Wessex was restored in 1042 for two more kings ... before William the Conqueror came along in 1066.
7. At the end of WWII in Europe the Germans still held a substantial strip of territory in Central Europe. When did fighting in Bohemia end?

Answer: 10 May 1945

Fighting in parts of Bohemia, especially between units of the Czech resistance and the Germans, continued after the official German surrender to the Soviet forces became effective on 9 May 1945.
8. What was unusual about 12 US Pacific Fleet ships sinking, over 200 crafts being damaged, 36 US sailors dying and over 100 US Naval personnel injured in Okinawa, 1945?

Answer: The war with Japan was already over

The incident was caused by a massive typhoon.
9. What was the relationship between US Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt?

Answer: 5th cousins

Theodore pronounced his name as "ROOZ-velt", while Franklin pronounced his name "ROSE-a-velt".
10. A portion of which present US state was occupied by the Japanese during World War II?

Answer: Alaska

Alaska would not become a state until 1959, but part of Alaska includes the Aleutian Islands, the outermost of which - Attu - was occupied in June 1942 and liberated in May 1943. The Japanese tried to use the threat of re-taking the island as a decoy during the Battle of Midway.
