The British Parliament passed the Commonwealth of Australia Act, uniting the colonies of New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia under a federal government.
European and American expansion in the Pacific prompted the colonies to put aside their differences and form a common defense.
2. In September of 1901, American President William McKinley was shot and killed. Who was then sworn in as the 26th President of the United States?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

McKinley was shot in Buffalo, NY, by 28 year old anarchist, Leon Czolgosz. He died 8 days later--the third president to be assassinated in the nation's history.

After nearly four years of labour by a work force of 11,000, the dam was complete. It was a mile and a quarter long and 130 feet high.
