1. What happened on 2nd November 1959?

Answer: First stretch of M1 motorway opened

The first stretch of the M1 ran from St. Albans to Birmingham and was 72 miles long. The opening ceremony was performed by Ernest Marples, Minister for Transport. The M1 now runs from London to Leeds and is 187 miles long. Joddrell Bank radio telescope became operational on 11th October 1957, launch of Sputnik 1 was on 4th October 1957 and the first crossing of the English Channel by hovercraft was on 25th July 1959.

Incidentally the first crossing of the English Channel by aeroplane (by Louis Bleriot) was exactly fifty years earlier, on 25th July 1909.
2. 11th November is when we remember the war dead. When was the first 'Poppy Day'?

Answer: 1921

In the UK the Royal British Legion sell paper poppies in the run up to remembrance day to raise funds for ex-servicemen and their families. Wear your poppy with pride.
3. Which of these world leaders did NOT die during the month of November?

Answer: Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler is thought to have committed suicide on 30th April 1945. JFK died on 22nd November 1963, Charles de Gaulle on 9th November 1970 and Leonid Brezhnev on 10th November 1982.
4. Britain's first women police officers started work in November of which year?

Answer: 1914

They started work on 27th November 1914 in Grantham, Lincolnshire.
5. On 15th November 1969 British TV screened colour advertising for the first time. What was the first product to be advertised in colour on that night?

Answer: Birds Eye Peas

Clarence Birdseye invented the modern freezing process in the 1920's. Earlier attempts at producing frozen food had disappointing results, such as the food dissolving when defrosting. Gibbs SR toothpaste was the first product advertised on British TV (22nd September 1955). I really don't know when the other two were first advertised on TV!
6. Which English monarch died on 17th November 1558?

Answer: Mary I

Mary is believed to have died of ovarian cancer. Prior to her death she had two suffered from two phantom pregnancies, probably partly caused by the disease that killed her. Henry VIII was of course the father of the other three and died on 28th January 1547. Edward VI died of consumption at the age of 16 on 6th July 1553 and Elizabeth I died on 24th March 1603.
7. Perkin Warbeck was executed on 23rd November 1499. What had he done to upset Henry VII?

Answer: Claimed to be the rightful King of England

Perkin claimed to be Richard Duke of York, the younger of the two princes in the tower. He was supported by various other European monarchs and attempted to invade England. He was captured and sentenced to death.
8. Which of Queen Elizabeth II's children married on 14th November 1973?

Answer: Princess Anne

The marriage ended in divorce and Princess Anne then went on to marry Commander Tim Laurence in December 1992. Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married on 29th July 1981, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson on 23rd July 1986 and Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones on 19th September 1999.
9. Which of these events did not occur on 5th November?

Answer: Murder of 11 Israeli athletes at 1972 Munich Olympics

The slaughter at the Munich olympics happened on 5th September 1972. The plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament was discovered on 5th November 1605 and the Battle of Inkerman took place during the Crimean war on 5th November 1854.
10. Which of these events occured on 1st November 1755?

Answer: Huge earthquake in Lisbon

The earthquake triggered a huge tidal wave. Over 60,000 people died in Lisbon. The Bastille was stormed on 14th July 1789 and is generally taken as the start of the French Revolution. There were only seven prisoners in residence at the time. The Boston Tea Party happened on 16th December 1773. The Battle of the Nile took place on 1st August 1798.
