Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were "cooties"?

Answer: Imaginary infestations

Most little boys believed that the surest way to get "cooties" was to touch a little girl. "Cootie" was also a kids' game where you rolled dice to collect your bug's body parts.
2. If a woman was "stacked", what did she have?

Answer: Large breasts

"Stacked" was one of the milder terms to express a part of the female anatomy. Of course, the basic tight sweater style and nose-cone bras of the 50s added much to our descriptive vocabulary.
3. What was a "flattop"?

Answer: Hair cut

As the term suggests, barbers actually sculpted a boy's hair to resemble a table top. Thick "Butch Wax" was available to accommodate the effect.
4. If a girl had a reputation as "fast", what was she?

Answer: Sexually active

"Fast" was the direct opposite of "frigid", and was the surest designation, whether true or not, to ruin the chaste reputation of a 50's young lady.
5. What were "dibs"?

Answer: Claims

A common expression, often shouted by a member of a group, laid an almost sacred claim to whatever object the first speaker named, such as "Got dibs on the blue one" or "dibs on that one". The remaining group members were relegated to claiming "dibs" on the other, unselected items.
6. What was a "klutz"?

Answer: Uncoordinated person

The term could be used to denote either a one-time act, such as "Gosh, I'm such a klutz", or a more permanent condition like "Bobby is too much of a klutz to dance the twist".
7. What was a "blast"?

Answer: A good time

"We had a 'blast'" was a short, common expression to tell your friends about a pleasant experience.
8. What were you if you had a lot of "bread"?

Answer: Rich

Apparently related to the old expression "breadwinner". "Bread" was one of dozens of terms for money.
9. If a person were to "go ape", what would they do?

Answer: Become angry

When someone went "ape", it was usually a sudden outburst or explosion. Apparently, it had something to do with King Kong's behavior in New York City.
10. What was a "pad"?

Answer: Residence

Originally used by 'beatniks' to indicate their abode, it later became fashionable in the 60s to describe an offbeat eclectic residence as a 'hippie pad'.
