Both women tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford. On September 5, 1975 in Sacramento, California, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a former Charles Manson family member, tried to shoot the President. Her attempt failed because she had failed to load the pistol. Seventeen days later on September 22, 1975, Moore, a middle-aged political radical, fired a shot at Ford in San Francisco. Fromme wanted to draw attention to the imprisoned Charles Manson. Moore hoped to reconnect with her radical friends. Both women were sentenced to life imprisonment.
