USS Johnston, USS Hoel and the escort destroyer USS Samuel B Roberts were sunk during the Battle of Samar when they try to defend a US escort carrier group against a Japanese battleship and cruiser force.

SMS Luetzow was badly damaged during the battle. It received more then 20 hits from heavy shells and several torpedo hits. During the night, flooding forward became so serious that she hat to be sunk by a German torpedo boat. Though SMS Derfflinger and Seydlitz also suffered heavy damage (SMS Seydlitz had more than 5,000t of water in the forward part of the hull) they both managed to reach Wilhelmshaven.
