1. I was the site of the last pitched battle fought on the British mainland on 16 April, 1746. It was a bloody encounter where the Duke of Cumberland defeated Charles Edward Stuart (aka Bonnie Prince Charlie):

Answer: Culloden Moor

The Jacobite Highlanders numbered 4,500 to Cumberland's 9,000 Hanoverians. The terrible slaughter after the battle contributed to Cumberland's nickname, 'The Butcher'.
2. This was a great patriotic victory, for the Scots in September 1297. Here William Wallace defeated the Earl of Surrey and Hugh Cressingham:

Answer: Stirling Bridge

In less than a year, Wallace would be utterly defeated at the Battle of Falkirk.
3. It was here in 331 B.C., that Alexander the Great defeated a huge Persian Army under Darius:

Answer: Arbela

The battle is also often known as the Battle of Gaugamela.
4. It was here in 31 B.C., that those two great lovers Antony and Cleopatra, fought and lost a naval battle against Octavian:

Answer: Battle of Actium

The battle was indecisive for a long time, and then for some reason, Cleopatra appears to have given orders to leave. Antony fearing she was fleeing followed her. This discouraged and confused his fleet and it led to their defeat.
5. In 1571, another naval battle. A Christian force under John of Austria defeated Ali Pasha's Ottoman forces, denying command of the seas to the Ottoman Turks:

Answer: Battle of Lepanto

The Battle of Lepanto was the last significant engagement in the age of galley warfare, and signalled the start of the decline of Turkish influence in the region.
6. May 15, 1464, a Yorkist Army completely defeated a Lancastrian force near Devil's Water, all but completing the Yorkist hold on Northern England. Where was this?

Answer: Battle of Hexham

A few weeks after the Battle of Hedgeley Moor, on May 15, the Lancastrian forces were completely defeated near Devil's Water, to the south of Hexham, effectively ending the four year war between the rival Kings Henry VI (of Lancaster) and Edward IV (of York), in Edward's favour. On June 24, 1464, the Lancastrian stronghold of Dunstanburgh Castle also fell to the forces of Edward IV.

Answer: Battle of Sedgemoor

John Churchill (1650-1722), was made the first Duke of Marlborough during the reign of Queen Anne, and was highly regarded for his military expertise. He was second-in-command of the Royal Army sent to suppress Monmouth's Rebellion, and at the Battle of Sedgemoor he was chiefly responsible for the Royal victory.
8. In 451 A.D., the Roman General Aetius, with a coalition, defeated the famous Atilla the Hun, putting a stop to his campaign in Gaul:

Answer: Battle of Chalons

At Chalons or Chalons-sur-Marne (also referred to as the Battle of the Catalunian Plains, Maurica or Campus Mauriacus), the western Roman General Aetius with a coalition of Alans, Amoricans, southern Burgundians, Gallo-Romans, Salian Franks and Visigoths was able to defeat Attila's Hunnic host, which included allied contingents of northern Burgundians, Gepids, Heruli, Ostrogoths, Ripuarian Franks, Rugians, Sciri, and Thuringians. One of the truly underrated 'decisive' battles of History, Chalons put a stop to Attila's campaign in Gaul.

It was at this battle that, while attempting to cross the river, Marshall Josef Antoni, Prince Poniatowski drowned, within hours of receiving his Marshall's baton.
