Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This was probably the most monumental battle of the whole war. It may very well be the largest battle in history. It was the turning point of the war in Europe. It was a five-month siege in 1942-1943.

Answer: Stalingrad

The Russians won decisively, and it showed that Germany could be beaten. But victory came at a horrendous cost: two million lives, Russian, German, Romanian and Hungarian soldiers and a very large number of Russian civilians. After losing this battle, it was clear to many German military leaders and strategists that the war could not be won. Yet, they let it drag on for two more hellish years.
2. A ring of coral atolls in the Pacific, that form an almost picturesque lagoon, the far end of a defensive perimeter protecting the Japanese mainland. The main target was the largest island in the atoll. The first target in what would become the great ocean-borne offensive. (1943)

Answer: Tarawa/Betio

Betio, the target island in Tarawa, was about the size of New York Central Park. It was a two-day battle, yet the Marines and Navy suffered 3,407 casulties, and literally the entire Japanese garrison of 4,600 was annilhated. Only 17 Japanese soldiers survived. More men died in this two day battle than the in entire six-month siege of Guadalcanal.
3. This is not an especially influential battle, but so many lives were wasted that it had to be included. It was the battle that paved the way for the invasion of "Europe's soft underbelly" and was characterized by a whole series of mistakes, starting with the choice of the site for the attack. (1943)

Answer: The battle for Sicily

The landing site was the southern coast of Italy, which was a mistake because that would force British troops to fight east up cruel mountain terrain, which was slow and costly, then capture the Straits of Messina. That gave the German garrison of 300,000 time to evacute 100,000 troops to Italy. Even the German command was confused by the Allied strategy. Why not just capture the strait and force them into a suicidal battle in the mountins of Sicily? The Eighth army alone suffered 12,000 casualties.

The quote, "Europe's soft underbelly", was Winston Churchill's and was used to describe Italy - together with his longer-term hope of advancing through what is now Slovenia to the Danube Basin.
4. This battle decided the fate of Britain. A four month battle between the RAF and the Luftwaffe. Both tried to control the skies.

Answer: The Battle of Britain

The battle was won by the RAF, but regular bombing of Britain continued for many more months afterwards. It was Germany's first defeat in WWII. Operation Sealion, the German codename for the invasion of Britain, was postponed indefinitely - and the war continued. Hitler's aim of launching the attack on the Soviet Union without a war in the West became, to all practical intents and purposes, impossible.
5. Of the delaying battles fought by the Germans after Stalingrad, this battle was one of the most effective, almost stopping the Soviets from completing their northern drive to Berlin. The Soviets were slaughtered, due to the impatience of their high command.

Answer: The battle for the Seelow Heights

The attack was led by Chuikov's 8th Guards Army. It was the to be coordinated with an attack by the 5th Shock Army to its north, and the 69th Army to its south. Seelow commanded an almost perfect view of advanceing Soviet forces, and German artillery was very effective. Because the attack started to slow, the 2nd Guards Tank Army were ordered to attack towards Seelow also.

This prevented Soviet artillery pieces from moving forward to support the infantry. Also the pre-attack bombardment was the most massive of WWII. Soviet deaths, 30,000, German deaths, 12,000. (1945)
6. It was a small town in North Africa, that needed to be taken by American landing forces. It was attacked by elements of the 18th infantry four times before it had to be bypassed, showing American forces that North Africa was not going to be an easy campaign. (1942)

Answer: Battle for St. Cloud

The Axis troops defending St. Cloud were dubbed "third class" by American intelligence, yet the 18th was ambushed, repulsed three times before they bypassed St. Cloud. The defenders of St. Cloud stopped the whole landing force from reaching Oran on the planned day. Many civilians were killed in the battle.
7. The invasion of north-west Continental Europe by American, British, and Canadians which opened a third front.

Answer: Invasion of Normandy

This landing opened up a third front, forcing the Germans to fight in the East and the West (1944). The other front was the battle in Italy, fighting the British and the USA.
8. This battle is regarded as the last great battle of WWII. It is a large island in the Pacific, about 60 miles long and 18 miles wide. The kamikazes would strike hard, the Japanese would defend to the end, and two generals would die. This was one of the most fiercely fought battles in the Pacific theatre. (1945)

Answer: The Battle of Okinawa

Okinawa was defended by 110,000 Japanese troops against 183,000 American attackers. It was the bloodiest campaign of the entire Pacific war. 12,510 Americans were killed, and 107,539 Japanese dead were counted, although many Japanese were buried alive in caves, and were never counted. It was a omen of what might happen if America invaded Japan.
9. This battle was the climax for the Russians. Finally, after four years of fighting against the Nazis, they were at the gates of which city? (1945)

Answer: Berlin

Berlin was the second worst battle the Russians had ever participated in. Hitler was not ready to let Germany be destroyed until he had sacrificed its youth. The Hitler Youth fought in the rubble of Berlin taking out 350,000 Russian and Polish soldiers with them.
10. In the hellish fighting going on in Stalingrad, minor offensives and counter offensives were going on. But the largest took place at a small factory base, where the Germans launched a huge attack, and the Russians repelled them with a larger counter attack.

Answer: Red October Factory Complex

The complex was almost totally annihilated in the intense fighting going on around and in it. Attacks were launched in which tanks were used in the city itself. This was rare becacuse tanks were very vulnerable, as they had to stop and manoeuvre in the rubble. (1942-43)
