Answer: 5th Regiment

On July 2nd, 1861, Jackson assembled the men of the fifth regiment to scout northward from their position in search of General Patterson's Union troops. Supported by the Rockbridge Artillery and the 2nd and 4th regiments, Jackson's 2nd Regiment engaged the 1st Wisconson, 11th Pennsylvania and McMullen's Independent Rangers at what General Joe Johnston termed the "affair at Falling Waters, Virginia." Jackson's men carried the field and won their first victory. Jackson's men had killed 10 men and captured 50 more. Jackson lost 10 men out of 350 engaged along with a few wounded. Patterson estimated Jackson's strength at 3,500 men based on Jackson's firm stand.
9. The first major battle the brigade participated in and earned its famous nickname was 1st Manasses. Jackson's men had arrived by train and guarded the Blackburn's and Mitchell fords of the Bull Run Creek until ordered to the position that would earn them immortality as the "Stonewall Brigade." What position were they ordered to defend?

Answer: Henry House Hill

Arriving at the position at 11am, they anchored the left of the Confederate line. As Jackson rode forward he could see Federals massing for attack. Jackson notified General Bernard Bee that he was there to support him and deployed his troops for battle.

In the center of his line Jackson placed two batteries of artillery supported by the 4th and 27th regiments. The 5th was deployed to the artillery's right slightly detached to utilize the cover of a clump of woods. The 2nd and 33rd regiments were to the guns left.
10. We all know that on the fateful day of July 21st, 1861, the "Stonewall Brigade" was born with the famous quote by General Bee, "There stands Jackson like a stone wall, rally behind the Virginians!" But which Union regiments did Jackson's oppose and who did they earn this honorable name against?

Answer: 1st Michigan Infantry, NY Zouaves, Griffin and Rickett's Batteries

Jackson's men carried the position and demoralized the federals attack. The federals were broken and sent into a hasty retreat which culminated in the retreat of the entire federal army. Bernard Bee had fallen not moments after his memorable quote was made. Jackson's troops had captured some of the federal guns but casualties were high for the 1sy Virginia Brigade. 111 died, 373 were wounded and missing out of 2,600 men engaged.

Although he was given the name "Stonewall", Jackson always deferred this name to the regiment, saying that his men, not he, had won that honor!
