1. In Saxon times a farm in Derby belonged to Bola. This was to become which suburb?

Answer: Bolton

Bolton first appears in the Domesday Book in 1086. The church is of Norman origin, which suggests it existed the 12th century. In the 20th century it joined with the parish of Alvaston.
2. In this suburb is probably the largest Plague Pit in Derby. At the time of the plague this would have been on the edge of the town and ever since today the road has been called Deadman's Lane.

Answer: Litchurch

At the time of the plague, Litchurch was outside the town boundary and the Plague Pit was built around 1348. Today the road is called Deadman's Lane and has long been built over with houses.
3. This suburb is named after a French port. Which?

Answer: Dunkirk

It was first recorded on Burdett's Map of Derby (1767) but could date back to the time the port was acquired by England in 1658.

As Derby expanded, driven in part by the new Narrow Tape Mills being built, Fredrick Robinson built a the Church of St Luke (1868-71) for the workers. The district soon came to be called St. Luke's.
