1. There is a suburb of Derby named after an American state. Which one?

Answer: California

It's reasonable to assume the name has some association with the Californian gold rush of 1849 but the history of this area of Derby doesn't tell us why. It's situated roughly between Mackworth and Rowditch.

2. What was the original name of the area now known as Allenton?

Answer: Allen Town

It was founded around the 1870s by Isaac Allen who purchased some land and started to build houses for the growing artisan class. It quickly became known as Allen Town and there is still a street named after him - Allen Street.

3. According to the 1931 census one suburb particularly suffered terribly from overcrowding, poverty and unemployment. Which one?

Answer: West End

Known as one of the most deprived areas of Derby, the West End suffered from extreme poverty and overcrowding. There were around 620 people per acre compared to Allestree where there was just 2 people per acre.

Building started on a green field site for the Toyota factory in 1990 and the first car rolled off the production line just over 3 years later.

As the name says, Peartree was originally named Peartree Farm run by John Peach and his wife Ann. Following John's death in 1861 Ann remained only a short while before selling it to local builders. It was quickly demolished and houses built on part and Normanton Barracks built on remaining area.
