1. There is a suburb of Derby named after an American state. Which one?

Answer: California

It's reasonable to assume the name has some association with the Californian gold rush of 1849 but the history of this area of Derby doesn't tell us why. It's situated roughly between Mackworth and Rowditch.
2. What was the original name of the area now known as Allenton?

Answer: Allen Town

It was founded around the 1870s by Isaac Allen who purchased some land and started to build houses for the growing artisan class. It quickly became known as Allen Town and there is still a street named after him - Allen Street.
3. According to the 1931 census one suburb particularly suffered terribly from overcrowding, poverty and unemployment. Which one?

Known as one of the most deprived areas of Derby, the West End suffered from extreme poverty and overcrowding. There were around 620 people per acre compared to Allestree where there was just 2 people per acre.
4. What was the site of Derby's first airfield and later the site of a foreign car manufacturer?

Answer: Burnaston

Building started on a green field site for the Toyota factory in 1990 and the first car rolled off the production line just over 3 years later.
5. Manufacturing has played an important part of Derby's history ever since the early years of the industrial revolution, but one industry that ceased in the 20th century was the Alabaster Pits. Where were they located?

Answer: Chellaston

Mining of alabaster can be traced back to the 14th century in the area and it had many different applications from ornaments to plaster of paris and flooring.
6. One suburb that no longer exists is also the name a type of material.

Answer: Cotton

7. The original abbey in Derby was situated here.

Answer: Darley

The Abbey of St Mary's was founded here in 1268 and dissolved by King Henry VIII after the break with the Church of Rome following his divorce from Catherine of Aragon. The walls are still standing.
8. In the suburb of Litchurch, Joseph Strutt donated land which in the 1830s became England's first public park. What is the name of the park?

Answer: The Arboretum

Situated close to the centre but near enough for the ever expanding population the Arboretum became England's first public park. Landscaping was by Loudon, and urns and statues came from Stutt's garden.
9. This suburb was occupied by the Romans in the 1st century and there is evidence of a Roman fort.

Answer: Little Chester

Derby's oldest suburb, some of the area is 2,000 years old and suffered bomb damage during the Second World War.

Answer: Peartree

As the name says, Peartree was originally named Peartree Farm run by John Peach and his wife Ann. Following John's death in 1861 Ann remained only a short while before selling it to local builders. It was quickly demolished and houses built on part and Normanton Barracks built on remaining area.
