Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is an alternate term used for the All-Seeing Eye?

Answer: Eye of Providence

Usually interpreted as being the eye of God (or other spiritual power) watching over mankind, the Eye of Providence has been used in one form for another for centuries. While some might see this as a power keeping strict watch and control over every move humans make, others see it as a benevolent hand that is there to help in times of need.
2. One of the first examples of the All-Seeing Eye in history is found in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians called it the eye of which of the following gods?

Answer: Horus

In ancient Egyptian mythology, Horus was the son of Osiris and Isis. After the murder of his father by his evil uncle, Set, Horus sought to avenge the death. The fighting between Set and Horus was fierce and brutal, but without a victor. In one of the battles, the left eye of Horus was gouged by Set and later restored; the right eye, however, was associated with Ra (and sometimes called the Eye of Ra), the sun god.

The other deities, tiring of battle, sided with Horus, who became the ultimate victor. Horus is usually depicted with the head of a falcon and the body of a man and was said to be the sky god, as well as the god of war and hunting.

The right Eye of Horus was originally associated with the goddess Wedjet, and was a symbol of protection, power, and good health.
3. The Hindu god, Shiva, has a third eye that is called the All-Seeing Eye. Why is it usually depicted as being closed?

Answer: When it is opened it will destroy everything it sees.

Over 3,000 years ago, the Indian text, "Rig-Veda", made reference to the sun and other deities being an eye in heaven, one that never closes. The third eye of Shiva, also called the brow chakra eye, is considered to be the eye of all knowledge. When opened, it destroys evil and ignorance.

There are at least three instances, according to Hindu mythology, that Shiva used his third eye for this purpose. Often compared to a state of enlightenment, it is believed that some individuals, called seers, may find truth and perception beyond ordinary sight using the brow chakra eye.
4. In the Middle East the charm called the Hamsa represents protection from which of the following?

Answer: Evil Eye

The cast of the evil eye, resulting in some sort of misfortune or injury, was believed to be given to someone when they were unaware. Many ancient Middle Eastern people, including Mesopotamians, Phoenicians, and Hebrews created talismans, commonly called nazars, for protection from the evil eye. Believed to be the universal symbol of protection, the open right hand is also called the Hand of Fatima (Islam) and the Hand of Miriam (Judalism) continues to be a popular amulet found in jewelry and other types of art.
5. Called the "Rattlesnake Disk", this artifact was discovered in Alabama in the 1800s. Which Native American culture is believed to have created the disk?

Answer: Mississippian

Considered to be the second largest site (Cahokia Mounds is the largest) belonging to the Mississippian culture from the 11-15 centuries, the Moundville Archaeological site is location in Alabama, USA. It is estimated that approximately 1,000 people lived within the walls of the city, and another 10,000 people inhabited the surrounding area.

The disk, found when a farmer in the area plowed up the disk in the 1800s, is believed by some to symbolize the pathway to the inter-dimensional world of the ancestors, and is one of the most common Mississippian symbols of the portal to the otherworld.
6. In the ancient Greek "Hymns of Orpheus", the All-Seeing Eye is compared to which celestial body, which was worshipped by many ancient people?

Answer: Sun

Orpheus, in "To The Sun", describes it as follows: an "eternal eye with broad survey", comparing it to being the "Father of ages". He also calls it the "Great eye of Nature and the starry skies", "Faithful defender, and the eye of right". As in the "Rig Veda", the All-Seeing Eye is depicted as the eye of a benevolent creator who is always watching and protecting the good.
7. Which world-wide fraternal organization adopted the All-Seeing Eye as a symbol in 1797?

Answer: Freemasons

The purpose of the All-Seeing Eye as a Masonic symbol is to remind members that their thoughts and deeds are always seen by God, who is regarded as the Great Architect of the Universe. Other important symbols include the trowel, square, and compass, which are traditional tools used by stonemasons; the meaning and symbolism of each tool is taught through the use of ritual.
8. Many times in Christian art the All-Seeing Eye is placed in a triangle. What does the triangle represent?

Answer: Trinity

Believed to date back to at least the 16th century, the eye in the triangle surrounded by rays of light symbolizes the holy Trinity to Christians. It is evident in a 1525 painting, "Supper in Emmaus" by Pontormo, a student of Leonardo da Vinci, although some believe that it was added to the painting after the Council of Trent in 1545-1563 in line with new decrees.

In addition to being placed in the triangle, the All-Seeing Eye is also decorated with clouds and bursts of light to depict the holiness of God.

These symbols are seen in houses of worship for many different religions all over the world.
9. The All-Seeing Eye was added to the Great Seal of the United States due to the influence of Illuminati committee members.

Answer: False

Actually, most would argue that the All-Seeing Eye was chosen for the Great Seal by members of the committee who were Masons. The truth of the matter, however, is that the only Masonic member of the committee was Benjamin Franklin, and his suggested design was not adopted.

In addition, the All-Seeing Eye was chosen as a symbol for the Masons fourteen years after the Great Seal was adopted. Although the Illuminati was a secret Enlightenment society that was formed in 1776 in Germany, there is no evidence that it had any influence on the early founding fathers of the United States.
10. The United States is the only country that has used the symbol of the All-Seeing Eye.

Answer: False

One can see the All-Seeing Eye on the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man from France, as shown in the picture. It is seen not only on the currency of the United States, but also the currency of Estonia and Ukraine. In addition, it is seen on many coats of arms, churches, and university seals.
