Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The U-boat almost brought Britain to its knees. What did Hitler insist on before the war instead of more U-boats?

Answer: a large surface fleet

Instead of more U-boats, Hitler wanted a large surface fleet to rival that of the Royal Navy. This was impractical because Germany lacked the resources to build this fleet.
2. Which vital port allowed the BEF to escape from France in 1940?

Answer: Dunkirk

Hitler issued his infamous 'halt' order when the Germans were 18 miles from the port of Dunkirk, allowing the BEF to escape and fight another day. This is regarded as the gravest blunder early in the war.
3. What did Hitler do after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor?

Answer: Declared war on the United States

On December 11, 1941 Hitler went before the Reichstag and declared war on the United States. This was unsound for at least two reasons: it ensured that Germany would eventually fight a two front war and it brought the full economic and industrial might of the United States into the conflict. What's more, this was done for an Axis ally that did not do the one thing that would have been of practical use to him: Japan did not attack the Soviet Union in the Far East.

Instead, it went straight for the jackpot.
4. What was the main form Germany's 'Drang nach Osten' took under Hitler?

Answer: the invasion of the Soviet Union

The 'Drang nach Osten' was the drive to the East. (For Hitler it was also an attempt to destroy what he called 'Jewish Bolshevism'). With Great Britain still undefeated and a threat, Hitler gambled on a quick campaign in Russia against Stalin's Soviet Union.
5. By initially ignoring Moscow as a target and shifting a panzer corps south, what did Hitler lose in August 1941?

Answer: time

By shifting Guderian's II Panzer Corps to the south in order to secure oil, wheat, and coal in the Donets Basin and the Ukraine, Hitler lost the one thing he could not afford to lose in a swift campaign: time. Army Group Center was unable to resume an effective drive to take Moscow with the stiffening Russian resistance, and winter was approaching.
6. The airlift to supply Stalingrad was never going to work. What is the one thing that might have saved the German 6th Army?

Answer: Allowing Paulus to break out

The 6th Army might have survived if Paulus had been allowed to break out of the encirclement in late November 1942. Hitler refused to authorize this and Paulus would not cross Hitler. The result: the entire German 6th Army was annihilated.
7. What did von Manstein want that Hitler would not allow prior to Kursk?

Answer: a mobile strike force

After the successful winter counter offensives at Kharkov, von Manstein saw a need to shorten the front and above all the need for a mobile strike force to confront Russian attacks. Hitler became fixated on the Kursk salient and refused to shorten the front and would not allow a mobile strike force to plug inevitable Russian attacks. Kursk was the end of any German offensives in the East.
8. Hitler insisted the landings at Normandy were a __________ .

Answer: feint

Hitler insisted the landings at Normandy were a feint and the Pas de Calais was the real target. It took his generals over a month to convince him that the bridgehead at Normandy was the main Allied effort.
9. Hitler's 'stand and die' order was issued to troops on the Eastern Front in the summer of 1944. Which German Army Group was annihilated because of this disastrous order?

Answer: Army Group Center

Army Group Center and 20 divisions were lost because of this order. This loss surpassed that of even Stalingrad (355,000 men lost). The Russian offensive did not stop until it reached the Vistula in Poland.
10. What operation did both Model and von Runstedt object to in the fall of 1944?

Answer: Ardennes Offensive

Both Model and von Runstedt strongly objected to the Ardennes Offensive because both saw it as too ambitious, with little hope of any real success. Hitler as usual refused to listen to them and staked everything on this last gamble.
