Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which bird has been returned to Wiltshire in August 2004, after being absent from Britain since the 1830s?

Answer: the Great Bustard

About thirty chicks have been brought over to Britain from Russia. A large bird extending over three feet long as an adult, it was last seen in Britain in the 1830s where it was hunted as a form of food.
2. At the end of August 2004 which athlete was denied an Olympic gold medal opportunity by the actions of an apparent lunatic, who grabbed hold of him shortly before the end of the men's marathon?

Answer: Vanderlei de Lima

Held down by the intruder, he was eventually freed by the crowd. Possibly injured, having lost his rhythm and much of his long lead he bravely fought on to take the bronze medal. However, he was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal for sportsmanship.

A great example of sportsmanship in the face of adversity was shown by this Brazilian athlete. This vile act could have killed a lesser athlete on such a hot day and on such a hilly course. Those of us who see the battle of good and evil in this world can only draw our own conclusions. An inquiry into this incident is essential.
3. In August 2004 which British athlete won two gold medals for the women's 800 metres and also the 1,500 metres?

Answer: Kelly Holmes

This made Olympic history for Britain. Also, she ran all her races at what seemed to be an even pace and came from the back of the field to the front near the end of each race, as other competitors tired.

6. What was different about the person who pleaded guilty in August 2004 to an attempted armed robbery in a West Bromwich shop on 8th May, 2004?
