Brig-Gen Judson Kilpatrick led 3500 troopers on an ambitious raid against Richmond, Va. He angered his commander, Gen. Alfred Pleasanton, because he submitted his plan for the raid directly to Lincoln and Stanton. The raid failed.

With 8800 infantry and 1200 cavalry Gen. Early surprised Union Gen. Sheridan's 30,000 troops.
