After a disastrous first day they were with Gen. Pickett in his charge on July 3. The battle claimed 88% of the regiment's troops, The highest % of casualties for any regiment, North or South, in any battle.

He was recalled as military adviser to Pres. Jefferson Davis and sent to reclaim the territory in western Virginia. The draft office in New york City was attacked and burnt down. The burning of the draft office was the begining of a four day looting, burning, and murder spree.

Answer: Quantrill

He attacked the town with 450 men and for three hours pillaged the town. Union Gen. Thomas Ewing had many women (relatives) of the raiders jailed. The dilapidated jail that they were held in collapsed killing four women. Quantrill had lived in Lawrence for a short while before the war and had a list of persons to be killed.

Answer: Lynchburg

Lynchburg was a major rail center and Hospital during the war. Union Gen. Hunter attacked it in June 1864 but was beaten by Gen. Early.

On October 19, 1864 the town was raided by 21 raiders (CSA Troops). The robbed three banks and took $208,000. They brought with them "Greek Fire" a chemical that would burst into flame when exposed to air, but when they smashed their bottles against the buildings, the stuff would not burn. The raiders escaped to Canada.
