According to the Aeneid the city was destined to be founded by the descendants of Aeneas, a hero of the Trojan War, and thus Rome 'rose from the ashes of Troy'.

The original city had to be abandoned in 1541 due to attacks by the indigenous tribes; however a second (permanent) settlement was established in 1580 by Juan de Garay, who sailed down the the Parana River from Paraguay. Upon its reestablishment the city was named Holy Trinity, with only the port referred to as Buenos Aires, but over time the original name prevailed.
