Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It started the war: Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Hapsburg Empire was shot and killed by this type of pistol:

Answer: Browning

Two shots from a Browning semi-automatic pistol, one for the Archduke, one for his wife Sophie, were enough to kill them both and to plunge the world into a gruelling and devastating war.
2. Pope Pius X died only a few months into the war on August 20, 1914. Who replaced him?

Answer: Pope Benedict XV

White smoke streamed from the Vatican on September 3, 1914 as Cardinal Giacomo della Chiesa was elected as the Pope. The time of mourning was unprecedently short, and the Germans objected as the new Pope continued his predecessor's anti-German policy.
3. The feeling in Britain at the beginning of the war was that:

Answer: It'll all be over by Christmas

British feelings were high as PM Asquith declared, 'It'll all be over by Christmas'. He was very wrong about that! The war ended up lasting over four difficult years, and even then, it only set the stage for the Second World War.
4. The 'Red Baron', Baron Manfred von Richthofen, undoubtedly the greatest ace of WWI, officially shot down how many planes?

Answer: 80

The Red Baron was accredited with 80 confirmed kills. He was mainly known for his bright red Fokker triplane. This ace was both feared and revered. To honor this great pilot when he was shot down on April 21st, 1918, both sides didn't fly due to unofficial truce the following day, as von Richthofen was buried with the highest military honors at the site of his crash.
5. This British nurse was executed by the Germans:

Answer: Edith Cavell

Edith Cavell ran a school for nurses in Brussels, and was executed for helping Allied casualties to escape. Mata Hari was a Dutch dancer executed by the French on October 15, 1917 for spying . Sylvia Pankhurst was an active suffragette at the time. Elizabeth Garret Anderson was the first British female doctor.
6. On December 20, 1915, the Allies retreated from which important piece of ground?

Answer: Gallipoli

The Gallipoli disaster lasted nearly 10 months and cost many lives. The goal was to open the Dardanelles for the Allies. The Allied positions were abandoned amazingly without loss of life in a daring operation, as 90,000 men, 4,500 animals, 1,700 vehicles and 200 heavy guns were loaded on British ships during the night.
7. The greatest naval battle of WWI was the Battle of Jutland between British and German fleets. How many ships were sunk there?

Answer: 25

Off the coasts of Norway and Denmark, the British Royal Navy lost three battleships, Indefatigable, Queen Mary, and Invincible, three cruisers and eight destroyers, the German fleet lost less, namely: one battleship, Lützow, one pre-dreadnought Pommern, four cruisers and five destroyers.

It was considered a strategic British victory, as they were able to put their crippled fleet back to sea quickly, whereas the German flotilla was in dock for the rest of the war.
8. The first country to declare war on Germany after the US entered the war was:

Answer: Cuba

Cuba entered the war on April 7th, Panama on April 8th, Peru on October 5th and Uruguay on October 7th. None of these nations took an active part in the war, and the declaration was just a formality. But it strengthened the feeling that the war was a worldwide event, not just a European thing.
9. The United States entered the war on April 6, 1917. When did the US troops fire their first shots in the war?

Answer: October 27th, 1917

Although the US troops arrived on June 27, 1917, it took them three months to reach the Western front and enter the war. Even though the crossing of the Alantic Ocean didn't take THAT long, the Americans insisted on training their men both in the US and in England when they arrived.
10. Which of the following was new in World War One?

Answer: All of these

Air bombings by the Germans was introduced on London on October 4, 1914, as Zeppelins were the terror of the skies. The soldiers on both fronts used mustard and chlorine gas extensively. The British introduced tanks on September 15, 1916, at the Somme campaign.
