Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why was the Inquisition introduced into Spain?

Answer: all of these

When Castile and Aragon were united, the new country (which included other recent additions) in some respects lacked unity. Isabella and Ferdinand realized that making Spain an "all-Catholic" nation would increase their power. The false converts to Christianity were often members of influential families, and thus were seen as a threat.
2. Which definition best describes the term "conversos"?

Answer: Jews who were baptised into Christianity

The Jews in Spain were given the choice of either being baptised into the Christian faith or suffering a horrible death. Many naturally chose baptism, even though as "New Christians" they were themselves under suspicion from the Inquisition.
3. Tomas de Torquemada was made Inquisitor-General of Castile on what date?

Answer: October 2, 1483

By the time the Inquisition had grown to be the most powerful force in Spain, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand realized the need to put at its head a man who could stabilize and control it. They themselves suggested Tomas de Torquemada, who, to them, had proved to be the best choice for the role. On October 2, 1483, Torquemada was made Inquisitor-General for Castile, with Aragon coming under his jurisdiction just 15 days later.
4. Which term describes the "garment of shame" that heretics were forced to wear as a symbol of their "sin"?

Answer: sanbenito

The sanbenito was the "garment of shame" that heretics were forced to wear. Depending on the "sin" of the wearer, the type of the sanbenito worn varied, along with the certain times they were made to wear them. It was a loose-fitting garment with a hole through which to put your head; it reached to the knees and there were crosses sown into it.
5. The next Inquisitor-General who was to rise to such prominence as Torquemada and also serve as Queen Isabella's confessor was

Answer: Cardinal Gonzalo Ximenes de Cisnerors

Cardinal Ximenes, like Torquemada, was to have much influence on Spain's history, and Queen Isabella was so impressed by the manner of this man that she chose him to be her confessor.
6. In what year were the Jews expelled from Spain?

Answer: 1492

The expulsion of the Jews came about after Torquemada declared that they must go. This was to have a negative affect on Spain's economy, although the Inquisition grew even mightier because of it. Some of the Jews made their way to Turkey, France and the Netherlands.
7. Another religion was to suffer greatly at the hands of the Inquisition. This was the Muslims. What was the Spanish word used to describe Muslims baptised as Christians?

Answer: moriscos

The Muslim religion was not immune to the attentions of the Inquisition, either. They were persecuted along with the Jews.
8. The number of Jews and Muslims who were persecuted by the Inquisition is relatively small in comparison with the number of Protestants who were persecuted in Spain.

Answer: False

The Jews had suffered since the beginning of the Spanish Inquisition; but compared to the number of Jews and Muslims who were persecuted, the number of Protestants is not nearly as great. In fact, in only forty years under the Inquisition, Protestantism in Spain was almost completely eliminated.
9. The Inquisition was not only in Spain, it was set up in many other countries and lands as well. Which of these countries or lands was the Inquisition also set up in?

Answer: Portugal

Portugal was conquered by Philip II in 1580, bringing it under the jurisdiction of the Inquisition. The Inquisition in Portugal is said to have been known for its cruelty more so than the Inquisition in Spain.
10. In what year did the Regent, Queen Cristina, command that old Inquisitorial customs be abolished, bringing an official end to the Inquisition and centuries of persecution?

Answer: 1835

The Inquisition was finally suppressed in 1835, after a long decline in power following an age of "enlightenment". People of the time were generally becoming more educated, and with knowledge came intolerance for the barbaric ways of the Inquisition.
