Mao Zedong was a soldier and politician and held the post of 1st Chairman of the Communist Party of China from 1943 to 1974. He died on 9th September 1976. He led the Communist Party to victory in the civil war in China in the 1940s. As "Time" magazine put it: "His ruthless vision united a fractured people and inspired revolutions far beyond China's borders".
(Note: different traditions stipulate the "12 days" in slightly different ways. The usage here is that the first day starts on the evening of December 25 and runs through to the evening of December 26).
