Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did the original inhabitants in the Americas originally come from?

Answer: Asia

Although this subject has been hotly debated in the past it is now widely accepted that the original settlers in the Americas arrived from Asia.
They are most closely related to ancient Siberian nomads. The Ket tribe, of which there are fewer than 1,500 members left in Russia, are thought to be the closest living relatives to all present day native Americans.
2. How did the original inhabitants of the Americas reach the continent?

Answer: Via a land bridge that existed at the time crossing the Bering Sea

This land bridge existed during the last ice age when sea levels were much lower. This bridge at one stage was 1,000 km wide and inhabited. When this bridge was submerged as a result of the melting ice some of the inhabitants retreated to the South-East. They are the ancestors of all present day native Americans.
3. How long have the Americas been inhabited by humans?

Answer: Between 13,000 to 15,000 years

The earliest proof of human settlement in the Americas has been dated between 13 to 15,000 years. These early native Americans spread throughout the Americas, diversifying into many hundreds of culturally distinct nations and tribes. Although in Northern America most tribes were hunter/gatherers, further South the Mayas, Aztecs and Incas founded civilizations and great empires, each lasting for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years.
4. What was the main cause of death for indigenous tribes after the Europeans arrived in the Americas?

Answer: Contagious diseases

The indigenous tribes had no resistance to contagious diseases like measles that the Europeans brought with them and as a result died in their millions.
This was the main gift from Europe to the native Americans. Going the other way there was an abundance of new plants discovered in the Americas (including beans, squash, chili peppers, sunflowers, peanuts, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, manioc, avocado, pineapple, and cacao), but the two most important were the potato and maize. Under what has been called the Columbian Exchange the natives clearly got the short end of the stick.
5. How are the original inhabitants of the Australian continent called?

Answer: Aboriginal

The word aboriginal comes from the Latin word aborigines, derived from ab, meaning "from" and origo, meaning "origin" or "beginning". The word aborigines was originally used to indicate the first ancestors of the Romans.
6. When did the original inhabitants of the Australian continent first arrive there?

Answer: About 40,000 years ago

Aboriginal Australians are descendants of the first people to leave Africa up to 75,000 years ago, a genetic study has found, confirming they may have the oldest continuous culture on the planet.
They left from Africa to Asia around 70,000 years ago and arrived in Australia around 40,000 years ago.
7. What part of Australia did the indigenous tribes inhabit when the Europeans first arrived?

Answer: The entire continent

When Europeans first arrived the continent was sparsely populated but the indigenous tribes were spread all over Australia. However, the Europeans claimed large parts were uninhabited as an excuse to confiscate tribal lands.
8. How are the original inhabitants of New Zealand called?

Answer: Mâori

Aboriginals are from Australia. Indians can refer to native Americans or inhabitants of India. Zulus are in Southern Africa.
The Mâori arrived in New Zealand about 800 years ago from Polynesia by canoe.
They were expert seamen, able to traverse large parts of the Pacific Ocean in open canoes.
9. The original inhabitants of New Zealand often use the term 'tangata whenua' to describe themselves. What does this mean?

Answer: People of the land

It refers to the people who descend from the first people to settle the land of a district or to the country as a whole. Unlike in European thinking, where people own land, in Mâori the land is regarded as a mother to the people.
10. In the Mâori language what does the word "Mâori" mean?

Answer: Normal

I think they had good cause to consider themselves normal as opposed to the invading Europeans. Although the Mâori had a warrior culture there was no empire building. A typical Mâori settlement had between 40 and 400 inhabitants.
