Ironically, Brown had been asked whether he require a signal when everything was ready for him to be hanged. He said no, as long as he wasn't kept waiting too long. He then waited ten minutes until the orders were given and they were then misunderstood. So Brown was left waiting. Jackson also worried for his soul when he noticed that Brown didn't have a minister there with him.
