1. Who, in 1867, donated land in Derby to enable establishment of the Recreation Ground and Open Air Swimming Pool for use by the people of Derby?

Answer: Thomas Bass

Thomas Bass presented the land to the people of Derby and it subsequently became known as 'The Bass Rec', and has been in use ever since.
2. For many years the Shot Tower was one of the highest buildings in Derby and had it still been standing would have celebrated its 200th aniversary. When was it built?

Answer: 1800

The Shot Tower was used to produce lead pellets - molten lead was poured from the top through a sieve and allowed to fall some 150 feet into a vat of cold water.
3. In Derby one can't forget the Mighty Rams (Derby County Football Club). In what year were they actually formed?

Answer: 1884

Who said 1888? That was the year they played in the inaugural season of the Football League. They were actually formed four years earlier as an offshot of the County Cricket Club.

Answer: St Pancras

Andrew was born in Scotland in 1805 and died in 1887 and his business went into decline. The only obvious reference to his existence is a street - Handyside Street.

Richard Thorley was hanged outside Veron Street Gaol in 1862 for the murder of Eliza Morrow. He slit her throat from ear to ear because he suspected her of seeing another man.

Florence Nightingales connection with Derby is slightly tenuous because she was born in Italy, worked overseas for most of her life and died in London. Her family did, however, own Lea Hall just outside Derby.

Derby Railway Station opened in 1840 and was run by three companies, the North Midland which was the largest and longest established, Birmingham and Derby Railway and the Midland Counties Railway. The Midland Hotel opposite the station was built around the same time.

Answer: Ye Old Dolphin

Built in 1530 Ye Old Dolphin is allegedly the oldest surviving pub in Derby and situated very close to the cathedral.
