Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the admiral in charge of the Bismarck?

Answer: Admiral Luetjens

Admiral Guenther Luetjens (1889-1941) had joined the German Navy in 1907. He was decorated with the Knight's Cross (of the Iron Cross) for bravery in Norwegian campaigns. In accordance with German traditions, Admiral Luetjens went down with his ship.
2. Who was the captain of the Bismarck?

Answer: Captain Lindemann

Captain Lindemann (1899-1941) also went down with the admiral aboard the Bismarck. In WWI he had been a gunnery officer aboard the SMS Elsass and SMS Schleswig-Holstein. He was appointed a lecturer in 1931 and was promoted to Kapitaen zur See when he was given the command of the Bismarck.

He earned the Iron Crosses in World War I. When the Bismarck sunk the HMS Hood, Ernst Lindemann was awarded the Knight's Cross.
3. Which vessel intercepted the tanker/supply vessel Altmark?

Answer: HMS Cossack

The Altmark was the main supply vessel for the famous Admiral Graf Spee. Renamed the Uckermack, the Altmark soon afterwards sailed the full length of the Russian Arctic coast (with the help of Soviet icebreakers) and on to Japan through the Bering Straits.

In November 1942 she exploded at Yokohama. HMS Cossack was a Tribal class destroyer. It was built in High Walker Yard. It was also involved in the Battle of Narvik and was participating in the destruction of the Bismarck. Sadly, she was torpedoed and a bad weather caused the tow line to be broken; 159 of her gallant crew were lost.
4. What was unusual about the damage done to the Hotspur and the Hunter?

Answer: They collided

The Hunter was already damaged and the entire flotilla was making smoke. Visibility was low and when the Hotspur turned about, it was too late to avoid the collision. The depth charge option was just to throw you off course. :)
5. What were HMS Warspite's minor problems with the turrets after the Battle of Narvik when the German destroyers were counter-attacking?

Answer: Blast bags flew off and the turret filled with noise and fumes

The gunsmoke reduced visibility on the main fire control director and no hits were scored upon the stubborn and miniscule German destroyer which counter-attacked after the Battle of Narvik.
6. What type of sonar did HMS Hunter use?

Answer: Type 124

The Type 124 was an upgraded version of the Type 121. Its range was about 2,500 yards and was used to detect submarines.
7. How many Japanese carriers were sunk during the Battle of Midway?

Answer: 4

The carriers were Kaga, Akagi, Soryu, and Hiryu. The defeat at Midway was a tactical success for the U.S. as only the Yorktown and a destroyer were lost.
8. How was LST 289 damaged during a rehearsal landing of Normandy?

Answer: Torpedoed by a motor boat

The rehearsal took place in April of 1944. They were "invading" at Slapton. The torpedo caused massive damage in the bow area.
9. About how many vessels were required in Operation "Neptune"?

Answer: 7000

Operation "Neptune" is better known as the cover and landing vessel for D-Day. There were about 2,468 landing vessels, 1,656 landing craft used in moving material, and various other vessels. (1,213 warships and 1,600 support vessels which included a number of merchant vessels).
10. How many battleships were deployed in Operation Neptune on D-Day?

Answer: 6

The latter includes the HMS Rodney, HMS Warspite, HMS Ramillies, USS Nevada, USS Texas, and the USS Arkansas. Most of these vessels were out of date.
