Stalin and Truman - as well as Attlee, who replaced Churchill as British Prime Minister after the Labour Party's electoral victory over the Conservatives in July 1945 - had gathered to decide how to administer Germany, which had surrendered unconditionally nine weeks earlier. The goals of the conference included the establishment of the post-war order, the administration of Germany and countering the effects of war. (Suggestions that Germany should be dismembered were rejected).

One of the 'Big Three' had died (Roosevelt) and one had been defeated in an election (Churchill).

The attempt took place at the Führer's briefing hut at the military high command Wolfsschanze (Wolf's Lair) near Rastenburg, East Prussia (today Kętrzyn, Poland) on 20 July 1944. Stauffenberg's briefcase contained two bombs. He told Hitler“s butler that he needed to use the toilet and took the briefcase with him.

There he started priming the bombs but as he had to hurry he managed to prime only one. He hoped that activation of the one would activate the other one. He went back into the room and placed the briefcase under the table, announced that he needed to make an urgent phone call to Berlin, and then quickly left the room.

There was an explostion and he thought no one had survived. Though four people were killed and many injured, Hitler's injuries were only slight as he was shielded from the blast by a heavy, solid oak conference table. Colonel von Stauffenberg was executed the next day.
7. How did Mussolini meet his end?

Answer: He was caught by Italian guerrillas and shot dead

On April 27, 1945, near the village of Dongo (Lake Como), just before the Allied armies reached Milan, as they headed for Chiavenna to board a plane to escape to Austria, Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci were caught by Italian communist partisans. The following day, April 28, Mussolini and his mistress were both shot.
