Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1848 a posse captured Joseph Peter Lynch and his men after they had killed twelve people at Mission San Miguel. What was the motive for the murders?

Answer: a fortune in gold

John William Reed was operating the mission as a bread and breakfast, accepting only gold in payment. The rumor was that the gold was hidden on the property. Lynch and his gang killed Reed, his pregnant wife, and all of the employees and guests. They never did find the gold. They were found by the posse and Lynch was executed by firing squad.
2. Billy the Kid had been caught by a posse led by Sheriff Pat Garrett at "Stinking Springs". Once brought to trial in 1881, he was found guilty of murdering one man. Who?

Answer: Sheriff William J. Brady

Billy the Kid, born William Henry McCarty, Jr., escaped before his execution. The stories vary on how this was accomplished, but most agree that Sheriff Pat Garrett killed him. One theory that differs is that Pat Garrett staged the killing to allow Billy the Kid, his friend, to escape.
3. Which of these Cherokee was killed by a posse after being accused of the murder U.S. Marshal Daniel Maples in May 1887?

Answer: Ned Christie

Ned Christie, NeDe WaDe in Cherokee, was accused by John Parris, who was arrested for the crime. Christie, though proclaiming his innocence, was arrested, but escaped prison before his trial. He eluded lawmen and built a fortified house now known as "Ned's Fort". In 1892 a posse dynamited his fort. He was killed while running toward the posse.

Dick Humphreys told authorities in 1918 that he had witnessed the murder of Maples by Bud Trainer.
4. Wesley Barnett had been on the run since he shot his stepfather for the murder of his mother. He wasn't caught until 1888 when a posse with U.S. Deputy Marshals started looking. What was the catalyst for the U.S. Marshals to get involved?

Answer: dealing in illegal alcohol

It was Deputy Marshal John Phillips with a posse that found him at a dance, but Phillips was killed. Another posse was organized and found the outlaws. Deputy Wallace McNac, leaving nothing to chance, shot Barnett without warning.
5. John Sontag and Chris Evans, successful train robbers, were finally captured in 1893 by Marshal George E. Gard and a posse of three others. What did this fight become known as?

Answer: Gunfight at Stone Corral

John Sontag, his brother his brother George Contant, and Chris Evans were successfully robbing the Southern Pacific Railroad.

George Contant was captured and imprisoned and Sontag and Evans went on the lam train. Marshal George Gard, Hiram Lee Rapelje, Fred Jackson, and Thomas Burns waited in ambush in a deserted hut for Sontag and Evans. When they eventually did come, one of the posse was spotted and a gunfight ensued. Sontag was wounded and died a couple of weeks later. Evans lost an eye and an arm and remained in prison until 1908.
6. Which of these outlaws, who had been a member of the Wild Bunch gang and the Doolin-Dalton Gang, was killed by the posse led by Deputy Marshal Will Banks in 1895?

Answer: William "Tulsa Jack" Blake

The Wild Bunch gang were responsible for many successful bank and train robberies. Blake was killed by Deputy Marshal Banks after being tracked to his hideout in Oklahoma. The gunfight lasted over forty-five minutes until Blake tried to flee and was shot.
7. Immigrant coal miners began strikes on August 14, 1897 near Hazleton, Pennsylvania. The mine owners requested help from the Luzerne County Sheriff. Which Sheriff and his posse was responsible for the Lattimer Massacre?

Answer: James F. Martin

Approximately 300 unarmed Slav and German strikers marched to support the newly formed United Mine Workers Union. The marchers were ordered to disperse, but did not, and they were fired on. Many were wounded, and nineteen miners were killed - mostly shot in the back. The sheriff and his posse were brought to trial, but acquitted.
8. In 1917, a posse of 2,200 deputies arrested striking workers from Phelps Dodge and then loaded many of them on train cars to deport them almost 200 miles away. Where did this occur?

Answer: Bisbee, Arizona

The telephone and telegraph services were seized by the Phelps Dodge company to keep the news of the deportation from leaking. The deportees pleaded with President Wilson to be allowed to return to their homes. A committee was created to investigate and it found that "The deportation was wholly illegal and without authority in law, either State or Federal".
9. Murders would occur several times in the Ruby, Arizona, Mercantile store, but it was the brutal murders of Myrtle and Frank Pearson in 1921 that triggered the arrests of Placidio Silvas and Manuel Martinez. After their escape from a car transporting them to the penitentiary, what was found that led to their capture?

Answer: blood-stained file

They had been found guilty and sentenced. However, they killed Sheriff George White and Deputy L. A. Smith to escape the transport car. It was believed that the blood-stained file was used to cut off the handcuffs. A posse of over 200 men pursued the fugitives.

They were finally found and taken back to prison. Martinez was executed. Silvas, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment, escaped again and was never found.
10. Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow were ambushed and killed by a posse in 1934. Which of these Texas officers led the posse?

Answer: Frank Hamer

The posse consisted of Frank Hamer, B. M. "Manny" Gault, Bob Alcorn. Ted Hinton. Henderson Jordan and Prentiss Morel Oakley. The reports say that the ambush was baited with Henry Methvin's father and his truck. When the lawmen opened fire they shot approximately 130 rounds at the couple.
