Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I was the decisive battle of the Civil War's Western Theater. What battle am I?

Answer: Vicksburg

In the battle of Vicksburg, Union General Ulysses S. Grant besieged the town of Vicksburg, Mississippi, cornering Confederate General John Pemberton. On July 4, 1863, just a day after the Battle of Gettysburg, Pemberton surrendered and the whole of the Mississippi River fell under Union control, splitting the Confederacy in half.

A year later, Grant was recalled to defeat General Lee in the Eastern Theater, and he eventually won the war.
2. I am the battle in which the rise of the Ottoman Empire was halted on the seas. Which battle am I?

Answer: Lepanto

In 1571 the Holy League, a coalition formed by the Spanish to stop the Ottomans, sent out its navy under the command of Don John of Austria to defeat the previously unchecked Ottoman navy. They won a decisive victory, destroying over almost three-quarters of the Ottoman navy. This battle prevented the Ottomans from further expanding their power into the western Mediterranean.
3. I am the battle in which the United States finally defeated the Japanese Navy. I also included the final major battleship-versus-battleship action. What battle am I?

Answer: Leyte Gulf

At Leyte Gulf, on 23-26 October 1944, the Imperial Japanese Navy was utterly destroyed by both American carriers and battleships. Under Admiral William "Bull" Halsey, the US carriers fell for the Japanese decoy, but in doing so eliminated the remainder of the Japanese carriers. Meanwhile, the US's new battleships wiped out the Japanese destroyers and battleships.

This was the final decisive naval battle of World War II.
4. I was the battle in 48 BC in which Julius Caesar defeated his chief rival. Which battle am I?

Answer: Pharsalus

Caesar was close to taking over the Roman Republic, and the only one standing in his way was Pompey (the Great). At Pharsalus in Greece, the two forces met, with the result being that Caesar's seasoned soldiers wiped out Pompey's and forced Pompey to flee to Egypt. The pharaoh of Egypt murdered Pompey as soon as he landed, handing the rule of Rome to Caesar.
5. I am the battle in which George Washington nearly died before the Revolution. Which battle am I?

Answer: Monongahela River

In 1755, then-Colonel Washington and British General Braddock's forces were ambushed by the French and Indians. The British and colonials were overwhelmed and Braddock was killed, but Washington's steady mind under fire led to a successful withdrawal.

The possibly apocryphal story goes that Washington had several bullets through his coat and his horse was shot out from under him. Thankfully for Americans, he survived.
6. I was the battle between the Franks and the Muslims that prevented the Arabs from overrunning Western Europe. What battle am I?

Answer: Tours

Otherwise known as the battle of Poitiers, this battle in AD 732 marked the halt to the expansion of the Islamic Empire, and the rise of the Franks. The Frankish general, Charles "The Hammer" Martel, became the de facto ruler of early France, and his dynasty led to the rule of Charles the Great, better known as Charlemagne.

The Muslims, on the other hand, were confined to Spain, where they became known as Moors and stayed there until 1492.
7. I am the final battle in the War of 1812, yet I was fought after the war ended. What battle am I?

Answer: New Orleans

In 1815 General Andrew Jackson fortified the southern approach to New Orleans. He was attacked by British veterans under Sir Edward Pakenham on January 8, and his careful preparation paid off. The British were mowed down before his riflemen and musket-men, causing a revival of American pride despite losses in the war.
8. I am the battle that proved the power of English longbowmen early in the Hundred Years' War. What battle am I?

Answer: Crecy

King Edward III of England led a raid on the Norman coast of France, but he was met by the flower of the French cavalry. He drew up his archers on a hill and wiped out the French horsemen in over ten charges. This allowed the English to escape to Calais and preserved their modest gains in the raid.
9. This battle established the supremacy of the Duke of Marlborough as the preeminent commander of his time and saved the British in the War of the Spanish Succession. What battle am I?

Answer: Blenheim

At Blenheim, Marlborough launched assaults at each flank of the French army, pinning them down, and then sent his biggest attack at the center, cracking the French line and saving Vienna from being captured. The Allies (led by Britain) went on to fight the war to a stalemate with the French, finally ending the war at the Peace of Utrecht. John Churchill (Marlborough) became the most famous general of the early 1700s (along with Prince Eugene of Savoy) and set a great example of strategy.
10. I was the battle that brought William Wallace to prominence by defeating a superior English force. What battle am I?

Answer: Stirling Bridge

Made famous by the movie "Braveheart", the battle of Stirling Bridge during the Scottish War of Independence cemented William Wallace's reputation as a hero and proved that the Scottish could stand up to the English in battle. The Scots destroyed the English as soon as they crossed the bridge and sent them back in disarray.

Although a great boost to Scottish morale, the cause nearly collapsed when Wallace was decisively defeated at Falkirk one year later.
