Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Toronto Blue Jays become the first non-US baseball team to win the World Series. Director Quentin Tarantino's debut film "Reservoir Dogs" opens in theaters. The song "To Be With You" by Mr. Big hits number one on the US charts. Bandleader and television legend Lawrence Welk dies at age 89. What year was it?

Answer: 1992

Catcher Pat Borders was named the World Series most valuable player as Toronto beat the Atlanta Braves 4 games to 2 in the best of 7 series. Toronto would repeat as champions in 1993. Even though "Reservoir Dogs" did little at the box office, it would later gain popularity when Tarantino became a star director with 1994's "Pulp Fiction". Mr. Big released their first, self titled album in 1989, but it was the third album, "Lean Into It", that gave them their biggest hit in 1992.

The sixth of nine children, Lawrence Welk was born March 11, 1903 near Strasburg, North Dakota. "The Lawrence Welk Show", featuring easy listening music and family entertainment, debuted in 1955 and ran for 27 years.
2. Penn State defensive end Courtney Brown is the overall number one draft choice in the National Football League. Courtney Soloman makes his directorial debut with "Dungeons and Dragons". "Supernatural" by Santana wins Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Six year old Elian Gonzalez leaves the United States and returns to Cuba. What was the year?

Answer: 2000

Drafted by the Cleveland Browns, Courtney Brown finished his rookie season by leading the teams defensive line in tackles. The idea of a live action "Dungeons and Dragons" movie, based on the popular role playing game, bounced around for years before finally hitting theaters and bombing in 2000. Santana won several Grammy Awards in 2000, including Best Rock Instrumental Performance, Best Rock Album, and Best Song for "Smooth". Elian Gonzalez, his mother, stepfather, and nine others fled Cuba in November of 1999.

When their overloaded motorboat capsized, Elian was the only one to survive. Rescued by fishermen on Thanksgiving Day of 1999, the young Cuban became part of a tug of war between Cuba and the United States. Seven months after coming to the U.S., Elian was sent back to Cuba and reunited with his father.
3. The Dallas Stars win the Stanley Cup. "The Astronaut's Wife", starring Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron, is released in theaters. Britney Spears releases her debut album, "Baby One More Time". The Pulitzer Prize for Fiction is awarded to Michael Cunningham for his novel "The Hours".

Answer: 1999

The Star's defeated the Buffalo Sabres when, in the third overtime of game six, Brett Hull's controversial goal gave Dallas their fourth win in the best of seven series. Some thought Hull's left skate was in the crease and the goal should have been nullified. "The Astronaut's Wife" had an intriguing premise, but apparently people weren't ready for a blond Johnny Depp or Samantha Eggar with a thick German accent. Britney Spears debut album sold over 10 million copies, helping make her a superstar.

A movie based on Cunningham's book was released in 2002 starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Ed Harris.
4. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers win the Superbowl. Nicole Kidman wins her first Academy Award. On January 1st, "Lose Yourself" by Eminem is number one on the U.S. music charts. The space shuttle Columbia disintegrates upon re-entry.

Answer: 2003

Led by head coach Jon Gruden, the Buccaneers defeated the Oakland Raiders 48-21 to win their first Superbowl Championship. After receiving a Best Actress nomination for "Moulin Rouge" in 2002, Nicole Kidman won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2003 for her role as Virginia Woolf in "The Hours". "Lose Yourself" was on the soundtrack for Eminem's motion picture debut "8 Mile", and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Astronauts Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, David Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, and Ilan Ramon were all killed when Columbia broke apart after entering the atmosphere on February 1st, 2003. An investigation would later determine that there was a breach in the left wing caused by a missing fragment of a panel or seal.
5. In Golf, Ian Woosnam becomes the Masters Champion. "Green Card" wins the Golden Globe for Best Picture Musical/Comedy. The Judds have the highest grossing concert event of the year in the United States. Actor John Travolta marries actress Kelly Preston.

Answer: 1991

Woosnam was tied with Jose Maria Olazabal and Tom Watson at the beginning of the last hole. Woosnam was the only one of the three to shoot par, winning his first major title. "Green Card" starred Gerard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell. Depardieu also won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical/Comedy.

After being diagnosed with hepatitis C, Naomi and her daughter Wynonna launched their farewell tour, visiting 116 cities and grossing more than $21 million dollars. In ensuing years, Naomi's illness went into remission and within a decade she was once again in good health. Travolta and Preston's first wedding on September 5, 1991, by a French Scientologist minister, was declared illegal.

They were married again, legally, on September 12, 1991.
6. The Texas Rangers play their last season in Arlington Stadium. Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" hits theaters. George Michael, Queen, and Lisa Standfield reach number one on the United Kingdom singles chart with "The Five Live E.P.". Multi-millionaire Donald Trump marries Marla Maples.

Answer: 1993

The Rangers would move to The Ballpark in Arlington in 1994. "Jurassic Park" went on to become the highest grossing movie of all time, holding that distinction until "Titanic" surpassed it in 1997. Queen, Michael, and Standsfield recorded their number one song at the 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute concert held at London's Wembley Stadium. Trump and Maples already had a two month old daughter, Tiffany, when they married on December 20th of 1993.

The marriage lasted 4 years.
7. In tennis, Richard Krajicek wins the men's Wimbledon Championship. Mira Sorvino wins the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. "Tha Crossroads" by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony hits number one song on the U.S. charts. United States presidential candidate Bob Dole falls off a stage at a campaign rally.

Answer: 1996

Krajicek defeated MaliVai Washington in the finals to win his first Wimbledon title. Sorvino won the Oscar for her role as Linda Ash, a prostitute and porn star, in "Mighty Aphrodite". With "Tha Crossroads", Bone Thugs-N-Harmony tied a record set by The Beatles "Can't Buy Me Love" in 1964 for the fastest rising single on the charts.

The Republican candidate for president in 1996, Bob Dole, who was 73 at the time, was leaning over a decorative railing to shake hands with supporters when the railing gave way. Dole was largely uninjured in the fall, which was broken in part by photographers.
8. Major League Baseball honors Jackie Robinson by retiring his uniform number (42) for all teams. "Batman and Robin", starring George Clooney and Chris O'Donnell, is released in theaters. Tim McGraw releases his fourth album, titled "Everywhere". U.S. President Bill Clinton bans federally funded human cloning research.

Answer: 1997

Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, breaking the major leagues color barrier. George Clooney replaced Val Kilmer as the Caped Crusader for "Batman and Robin", the third sequel to 1988's "Batman" based on the DC Comic book character. McGraw's "Everywhere" went on to be named the Country Music Association's Album of the Year.

Although a sheep named Dolly was cloned in Scotland a year earlier, it was still not known if successfully cloning a human was possible when Clinton levied the ban on funding.
9. The San Francisco 49ers win the Superbowl in January. "Pretty Woman", starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, is released in theaters. The Black Crowes album "Shake Your Money Maker" is released. New York City police arrest "Dartman".

Answer: 1990

The 49ers crushed the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Superbowl 24 held in New Orleans. "Pretty Woman" made Julia Roberts a mainstream star and also earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. "Shake Your Money Maker" featured The Black Crowes hit singles "She Talks to Angels" and "Jealous Again". "Dartman" had stabbed over 50 women in New York with featherless, three inch steel darts.
10. New Zealand wins the America's Cup. David Letterman hosts the Academy Awards ceremony. Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia" wins Song of the Year at the Grammy Awards. George W. Bush takes office as Governor of Texas.

Answer: 1995

Skipper Russell Coutts took New Zealand's yacht "Black Magic" to victory in the America's Cup held in San Diego, California. It was the first win for New Zealand in the 144 year history of the race. David Letterman was one of the first to admit that his brand of humor did not go over well with the Oscar crowd.

The Academy decided not to invite Letterman back the next year, choosing to bring back Billy Crystal as host. "Streets of Philadelphia" was on the soundtrack to the 1993 film "Philadelphia" starring Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. Fresh from his duties as managing general partner of baseball's Texas Rangers, Bush took office as Texas Governor on January 17th, 1995, serving until he was elected President of the United States in 2000.
