Answer: September 1st 1939

World War 2 began on September 1st 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later.
The invasion of China by Japan is considered by some historians to be a WW2 battle.
2. What was considered to be a major defeat but was also seen as amazing victory for France and more particularly Britain?

Answer: The Dunkirk Evacuation

In the Dunkirk Evacuation the British and French troops stranded at Dunkirk were evacuated to Britain by naval vessels and an assortment of civilian boats, some quite small, including yachts and fishing boats.
3. What noteworthy event happened in the Ardennes forest in 1944?

Answer: The Battle of the Bulge

The Battle of the Bulge was the last German offensive in the war. An important part of the Battle was fought in and around the Belgian town of Bastogne. The American 101st airborne "Screaming Eagles" division were encircled around the town. After a week, General George Patton and his 3rd army broke through the German lines and rescued the 101st.

Answer: The invasion of Normandy (D-day), Operation Overlord

The invasion of Normandy was the beginning of the end of World War 2 in the West. It took years of planning and training for the soldiers. Lots of information was learned from the failed landing at Dieppe. Many fake spy reports were sent saying the invasion would take place in the Pas de Calais. The five landing beaches were code named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

The invasion of Okinawa in 1945 is considered by some historians to have been bigger.
6. At which battle did the tide turn for the Americans against the Japanese navy?

Answer: Midway

The battle of Midway happened from June 4th to 7th 1942. The Japanese were trying to destroy US positions on Midway Island to establish a staging point for a future invasion of Hawaii but were intercepted by Admiral Spruance's and Fletcher's task forces with the carriers USS Enterprise, USS Hornet and USS Yorktown.

They successfuly sank the Japanese carriers IJN Akagi, IJN Kaga, IJN Soryu and IJN Hiryu and the heavy cruiser IJN Mikuma. The Japanese only sank the USS Yorktown and the destroyer USS Hammann.
7. What was the US battleship class commissioned in World War 2 and decommissioned in the 1990s?

Answer: Iowa class battleships

The Iowa class battleships were the USS Iowa, USS New Jersey. The most famous in the class were USS Missouri and the USS Wisconsin. They are all museum ships now and were the last battleships ever.
8. What of these World War 2 airplane companies did NOT make US planes?

Answer: Hawker

Hawker made airplanes for Great Britain. Planes they made were the Hawker Tempest, the Hawker Typhoon, the Hawker Tornado and the world famous Hawker Hurricane. Curtiss, Vought and Grumman made US planes instead.
9. What was the useful weapon if a soldier were pinned down by enemy fire?

Answer: A mortar

The mortar, if you had one, came in handy when you are under fire. It is a small artillery piece and when you drop a mortar projectile in the long tube it shoots it up into an enemy position. It is particularly useful if your enemy is in a foxhole or a trench or dugout.
10. When did world war 2 end?

Answer: September 2, 1945

World War II ended on September 2 1945 when the Japanese surrendered on board the Iowa class battleship USS Missouri. Around the world, cities celebrated VE (Victory in Europe, May 8 in most countries but May 9 in the Soviet Union) and VJ (Victory in Japan) days with huge parties, fireworks, parades, etc to celebrate that war was finally over!
