The Atlantikwall was a defensive line of bunkers that stretched from Norway to the Spanish border.

The invasion of the Gilbert Islands took place in November 1943. The U.S. marines took large casualties in the assault of the largest island in the group Betio, part of Tarawa Atoll.

Kurt Tank was the main aircraft designer for the Focke Wulf company. The final version of the Focke Wulf 190 was named the Ta 152 (Tank 152) in his honour.

The two Focke Wulf 190 fighters of JG 26 (Jagdgeschwader or fighter wing 26) strafed the invading British troops on Sword Beach. This was a bit of a shock because the Allied troops had been told beforehand that any aircraft overhead would be friendly.
5. What was the German "Fall Rot" (Operation Red)?

Answer: The invasion of France in 1940

"Fall Gelb", Operation Yellow, the invasion of the Low countries and northern France began on the 10th May 1940. It ended after the Dunkirk evacuation in early June 1940. "Fall Rot", the invasion of France was launched on June 6th 1940 by some 140 German divisions. During this operation, German units advanced as far as Cherbourg and Lyons, as well as capturing Paris itself.

It culminated in the French surrender on June 22nd 1940.

Answer: The "Cockleshell Heroes' " raid on Bordeaux harbour

The "Cockleshell Heroes" of the British Royal Marines raided Bordeaux harbour in France on the 11th December 1942. They paddled up the river Gironde, in canoes, to their target and seriously damaged five German merchant ships. Of the ten men who set out, only two survived the raid.
7. Which Japanese aircraft carrier was sunk at the Battle of the Coral sea in May 1942?

Answer: Shoho

The U.S. navy lost the aircraft carrier Lexington and the battle is generally regarded as a draw.
8. Where would you find a "Biscay cross"?

Answer: On a submarine

The Biscay cross was a radar warning receiver fitted to German U-boats. It warned of approaching Allied aircraft that were using radar to detect the U-boat on the surface.
9. Which Russian armoured unit stopped the German advance on Kursk, at the village of Prokhorovka, on the 12th July 1943?

Answer: The 5th Guards tank army

The 5th Guards tank army clashed with the German "Totenkopf" SS panzer division in the greatest tank battle in history. Over 1500 tanks fought it out at close range around Prokhorovka. Around 700 tanks remained burning on the battlefield at the end of the battle.
10. The German 12th army was ordered to break the Russian encirclement of Berlin by Hitler in April 1945. Who was in command of the 12th army?

Answer: Walther Wenck

Although the 12th army failed to break through, they did provide a vital escape route for numerous German units and civilians trying to avoid Russian captivity.
