Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The German '88' was what kind of weapon?

Answer: Anti-aircraft and anti-tank

The German '88' was the most feared of the German anti-tank weapons. Its high velocity shell could penetrate any allied tank, and it was quite effective against allied aircraft.
2. This German Field Marshal was also known as 'Smiling Albert':

Answer: Kesselring

Just some useless info picked up from a book I once read, apparently Kesselring smiled quite a bit.
3. This tank was created in direct response to the appearance of the Russian T-34 and the KV series tanks on the battlefield:

Answer: Panther

The Panther was created to counter the superiority of the new Russian tanks. It was rushed through production to make its first appearance at the Battle of Kursk. Hitler thought that combined with the Tiger and Ferdinand (Elephant) tanks, the Germans would win a decisive battle.

The Panther proved to be mechanically unreliable at first but improvements to its' design would make it perhaps the best overall tank of the war.
4. The Ploesti oil fields, vital to the German war effort, were located in which country?

Answer: Romania

They were located in Romania. The Americans staged a daring raid on them in an effort to cripple the German war machine. Although the raid was successful, the USAAF sustained heavy losses, and the Ploesti fields continued to supply Germany until they were captured by Soviet troops.
5. Which of The Allies was the first to field jet aircraft in the European theatre?

Answer: Britain

The British flew the Gloster Meteor in the closing months of the war from March 1945. It never met its rival, the German ME262, in combat. The Americans were working on the P-80 Shooting Star and four were delivered to England and Italy in early 1945, but they never entered combat operations. The Soviet Union was close with the MiG series jets, but Japan was not in the jet race.
6. Which US Division was tasked with capturing Hitler's famed Eagles' Nest Complex in the Alps in the closing days of the war?

Answer: 101st Airborne

The 101st was given the mission, the Allies feared that Hitler and the remains of his SS would create a 'Nazi fortress' in the Alps. The 101st encountered little or no resistance when they reached the area and even took Hitler's limo for a spin.
7. The name of the German expeditionary air force in Spain during its Civil War was known as:

Answer: The Condor Legion

It was the Condor Legion. Hitler saw the Spanish Civil War as an excellent opportunity to try out his 'new' Luftwaffe and possibly court a future ally in Spain.
8. Which of the following countries did not commit troops to the British Commonwealth Forces?

Answer: Eire (Irish Free State)

The Irish Free State was only nominally a member of the Commonwealth and was neutral. New Zealand, South Africa and India troops fought alongside Britain.
9. The Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska was actually a diversion to draw the Americans away from ...?

Answer: Midway

The Americans were wise to the Japanese plans, which led to what some would call the turning point of the Pacific War..the Battle of Midway.
10. Where was the last major airborne operation of the German Army carried out?

Answer: Crete

After the battle, Hitler was so disturbed by the heavy losses that he never again allowed his elite troops to be used in such a large scale airborne operation. The German paratroopers continued to fight tenaciously in Italy and Western Europe, but they were relegated to an elite infantry role.
