Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What geographical feature was successfully attacked by the Canadians in April 1917?

Answer: Vimy Ridge

The main Canadian memorial in France stands atop Vimy Ridge. On Easter Monday 1917, the Canadian Corps succeeded in taking the Ridge from the Germans, something that the British and French had previously been unable to do.
2. Which Treaty was signed in 1919 at the Paris Peace Conference..the Treaty of ....?

Answer: Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles declared Germany guilty of causing the War and harsh conditions were imposed on that country by the Treaty. There have been several Treaties of Paris, including that signed after Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo in 1815.
3. One of the 'sideshows' of the Great War took place in Mesopotamia. As what is Mesopotamia now known?

Answer: Iraq

The fighting between the British and Turkish armies at (Al) Kut on the River Tigris was particularly heavy.
4. Which German airman had a flying maneuver named after him?

Answer: Max Immelmann

The 'Immelmann turn' was a half-loop followed by a half-roll. Max Immelmann was killed in action in 1916. Boelcke was a respected leader and tactician. Lothar was the brother of the 'Red Baron'.
5. The salient around which Belgian town saw heavy and bloody fighting throughout the War?

Answer: Ypres

The British Tommies called it 'Wipers'. There were three major battles of Ypres in 1914, 1915 and 1917. Third Ypres is often referred to as Passchendaele. The official/Dutch spelling of Ypres is 'Ieper', used more frequently in later years.
6. What is the correct spelling of the surname of the 'Red Baron'? Manfred von ....?

Answer: Richthofen

The top-scoring German ace, Manfred von Richthofen has captured the imagination of many over the years. The circumstances of his death in action in 1918 are still the subject of great debate.
7. What is the poem by Canadian doctor Colonel John McCrae, wherein the Dead exhort us not to 'break faith' with them?

Answer: 'In Flanders Fields'

I first learned 'In Flanders Fields' as a schoolchild in Canada, it was recited every November 11th. 'Dulce et Decorum' and 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' are by Wilfred Owen, 'The Soldier' by Rupert Brooke.
8. Who was Commander-in-Chief of the British forces on the Western Front from December 1915 until the end of the War?

Answer: Douglas Haig

Haig took over command from French. Congreve was a Corps commander, Maxse a divisional commander during the Somme offensive of 1916.
9. Which disastrous campaign of 1915 included a landing at Anzac Cove?

Answer: Gallipoli

The Australian and New Zealand forces (Anzacs) fought well and hard in the Gallipoli campaign, as did all the troops involved. The campaign was however, ill-conceived and after months of bloody fighting all troops were withdrawn in January 1916.
10. Which of the following was a German cruiser making raids upon merchant shipping in the Indian Ocean during the early days of the war?

Answer: Emden

Emden was one of several German surface raiders roaming the seas in 1914. The greater danger to Allied shipping was posed by U-boats, in the Great War as in WWII. Tirpitz and Bismarck were Second World War vessels.
